Since 1985, the Honda Rebel has provided a friendly, affordable introduction to the world of motorcycling. If you ever took an MSF Rider Course, you probably learned to ride on one of the Rebel 250s. In 2017 Honda upgraded the model with two new versions, a 300 and 500, both with refreshed styling and other upgrades. This one, the Rebel CMX500, is powered by a liquid-cooled, 471cc parallel twin, DOHC motor lifted straight from the CBR500R, but retuned for more torque and low-end grunt. The styling and ergonomics work together beautifully with the 3-gallon gas tank that slopes down to a dished solo saddle. A narrow handlebar and mid-mount pegs put the rider in a comfortable position that is surprisingly un-cramped. All together it’s a proven package — as reliable to run as it is pleasurable to ride.
This machine had its scheduled service/oil/filter change about three months and not many miles before it came to us. And now it has been completely checked out for performance compliance and safety by our Service Department pros. We gave it NEW TIRES, front and rear, and filled them with nitrogen to give them a longer life and better ride characteristics. We replaced its brake fluid, gave it a chain service, installed a Battery Tender quick-connect harness to make your routine battery maintenance a snap, and generally tweaked and adjusted everything to its optimum performance level. Our extended test ride and the rigorous Maryland Safety Inspection together verified that this Rebel bound for glory. It runs like new. Ride it and smile!
We would say this bike looks as good as it runs, but we have to be honest; there are a couple of visible signs of its previous life that we need to mention. The bike had a tip-over (yeah, don’t they all?), but while most tip-over damage is negligible and you just learn to live with it, this one’s a bit more serious. There’s a significant dent along with some small scratches on the left side of the tank, and scuffs and cracks on the left mirror housing. These cosmetic issues will be difficult to ignore. You can see them in the photos. Repairable? Sure, but we’re leaving that choice up to you — because maybe you were looking for a bike to be a starting platform for a customization project. If that’s the case, then here you go! Naturally, the price of this Rebel has been adjusted to reflect these cosmetic concerns. Of course, the bike has been deep cleaned and thoroughly detailed and so, you must admit, looks pretty darn good otherwise. Lastly, we need to mention that it also has a sweet TBR sport exhaust on it to complete its lean and mean look.
