Believe it or not, the words “PROJECT BIKE” are like a dog whistle to a certain type of BMW owner. These are riders who have a space to work, some tools, and enough know-how to confidently embrace mechanical challenges, who appreciate the self-satisfying glow of completing a successful restoration, and let’s admit it, riders who would rather DO IT THEMSELVES and enjoy saving a few bucks in the process. Well guys, that dog whistle should be loud and clear in your ears. Here’s a PROJECT BIKE that will give you LOTS to do in the weeks ahead, and it definitely holds the promise of being a great bike and a great value once its issues are all sorted out. Read on for more details, OR — jump on it right now and call 1-888-269-2627 to speak with one of our BMW Certified Sales Advisors —Jim, or Todd. Call TODAY!
As with all PROJECT BIKES we want buyers to know as much as possible about the bike before making a purchase. We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that the new owner for each and every PROJECT BIKE feels they paid fairly and got a good, if not great value in the deal. We encourage people to call, schedule a time to meet with one of our sales advisors and inspect each machine in person so they fully understand all the positives as well as the potential downsides involved in the refurbishing process. Please take a moment to learn more about Bob’s PROJECT BIKE program and read our general disclaimer HERE.
Cosmetics first. One look at the photos and you can see the obvious issues. The bike hit the pavement on the right side and looks like it may have slid for a bit too. The lower fairing and saddlebag took the worst of it. Nasty. There are some other noticeable scratches in the paint elsewhere on this PROJECT BIKE, but nothing as bad as on the right side. There is a tear or hole in the passenger seat cover. The bike appears to have been parked outdoors without a cover for much of its life resulting in severe weathering and UV degradation to the controls and other vulnerable plastic surfaces throughout.
We have a lot of mechanical information to share on this PROJECT BIKE. Perhaps the best way to acquaint you with it is to share the Technician’s Report written directly after a shop evaluation and extended test ride. Here it is verbatim:
STARTS AND IDLES. DOES NOT SOUND GOOD AT IDLE – LOUDER THAN IT SHOULD BE. HEADLIGHT AND HIGHBEAM WORK, TURN SIGNALS WORK, BRAKE AND TAG LIGHT, HAZARD LIGHTS AND SWITCHES WORK. HEATED GRIPS WORK. SHIFTS INTO FIRST BUT STRUGGLED TO FIND NEUTRAL. ENGINE PULLS STRONG IN FIRST GEAR. IN SECOND AND SIXTH GEAR THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS. CLUTCH SEEMS OK BUT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED. DOES SHIFT THROUGH ALL SIX GEARS AND BACK DOWN. WHEN DEACCELERATING THE ENGINE DOES NOT SOUND GOOD BUT SMOOTHS OUT UNDER THROTTLE. BRAKE FAILURE LIGHT REMAINS ON.
So, you’ve got a mix of ominous concerns and positives here. Just like life. And there is a deeper service history to this motorcycle that you can find out about just by asking. But there are quite a few other positives about this PROJECT BIKE worth mentioning, too. For instance, the previous owner had NEW TIRES installed in early July of this year and they are essentially still like new. At the same time, he also had NEW REAR BRAKE PADS installed and a complete brake fluid flush. And aside from the bad scratches on one side of the bike, much of the rest of the cosmetic appearance isn’t so bad. A better future is in sight. Finally, let’s point out the Factory Options that came installed on this bike:
• BMW Integral Side Cases (color-matched)
• BMW 28L Top Case
• ESA II (Electronic Suspension Adjustment)
• On Board Computer
• Heated Grips
• Heated Seat
• Electronic Cruise Control
Some of the PROJECT BIKES we offer are a piece of cake. And there are others like this one that are, well … not for sissies. Nevertheless, we are confident that the right person is out there who can take this machine, give it a new life, and derive a satisfying value in the end.
The bike comes with two keys, original owner’s manuals, but no tool kit. Of course, it’s priced very attractively. Come in now check it out for yourself.
