We’re selling this R1150RT-P as a PROJECT BIKE because it needs some maintenance and new tires, and it has a number of cosmetic issues (mostly superficial). But this is a PROJECT BIKE that you can ride right now! It runs well and passes Maryland State Inspection. It’s a Great Opportunity for the right buyer who has the time and skills to bring it back to its full potential! Like all our PROJECT BIKES, of course, it is sold AS IS, but it’s priced accordingly. Permit us to say it’s a STEAL, which is humorously ironic for a Police Bike.

We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that the new owner for each and every PROJECT BIKE feels they paid fairly and got a good, if not great value in the deal. This R1150RT-Police PROJECT BIKE is a classic “Oil-Head.” These are popular models for good reason; a proven air/oil cooled, two-spark engine renowned for its reliable power and longevity, wrapped in a durable chassis that boasts BMW’s famously great handling Telelever front- and Paralever rear-suspension, components that are still successfully deployed on the latest R1250RT models. This bike has less than 44,000 miles on the clock — below average for a bike of this age — so the next owner can expect several years and many thousands of miles of enjoyable use ahead. We evaluated this PROJECT BIKE thoroughly and found that all its critical systems are in good working order. It’s due for routine service, and it should get new tires soon because the tires that are on it, while still well within legal tread depth limits, are older than ideal which reduces their amount of safe traction. The cosmetic issues mentioned above are visible in the photos. There are minor scrapes on both sides on the valve covers and engine protection bars, scuffs on the lids of the side cases, and a variety of blemishes in the paint on the tank and elsewhere. This bike was washed but not detailed. That means that many of its blems could be greatly reduced or perhaps eliminated with some proper attention. But if worrying about cosmetics is not your thing, you could just ride it like it is, never do a thing to its appearance, and go on smiling. In any case, the value here is exceptional!
For a little background on BMW Police (Authority) Bikes: In the past twenty years or so BMW has dramatically increased the number of Authority Bikes sold to state and local police departments throughout the US, steadily chipping away at the market dominance formerly held by Harley-Davidson. Maryland residents must certainly have noticed their State Troopers proudly patrolling the highways on BMWs. A small number of BMW Authority Bikes make their way each year into the civilian marketplace, new ones in rare cases (Bob’s has been fortunate to offer some of these), but mostly as used ones that police departments sell off when they upgrade to new models. That’s the case with this PROJECT BIKE, which was originally in the fleet of the California Highway Patrol before being sold to the second owner, who eventually brought it to us. In all cases, Authority models released for use to the public have had, as legally required, all special equipment such as police lights, sirens, and radios removed.
Nevertheless, this R1150RT-P PROJECT BIKE is still equipped with several features unique to the BMW Authority Package, such as: Exclusive Police Paint Scheme (this one in traditional CHP Black & White), Police Solo Saddle, Speedometer Calibration, Double Horn, Police Radio Box (a special Top Case that replaces the rear seat) with extra side marker lighting, Front Chrome Protection Bars, Rear Chrome Protection Bars, Boosted Power Supply (extra accessory sockets), Additional Secondary Battery, Supplemental Tail/Brake Lighting, and Enduro Transmission. PLUS a few nice options that, while more commonly available, are extremely useful to have: ABS (Partial Integral), Heated Grips, and BMW Integral “City Case” Side bags.
This 2004 R1150RT-P comes with one key that fits ignition & chassis locks, a single separate key for the luggage, and the original owner’s books.
