This is perhaps one of the rarest machines BMW offered for sale in the United States over the past several decades. While in the European market it was popular, widely available, and offered in a variety of colors over a span of years, things were different on this side of the Atlantic. Fewer than 300 were imported to the US in late 1994 and ’95 — all in the one color you see here: Mystic Red Metallic.
Intended as a more stylish alternative to the standard R100 Classic in black metallic with silver pin stripes, the R100 Mystics sold out in short order. This model represents the final chassis upgrade made to the air-cooled 1,000 cc twin, and has been a sought after, hard to locate model ever since. Like the other 1992 to 1995 R100R Classics, the Mystic came with some desirable features such as the more costly alloy wire spoke wheels that used tubeless tires, an oil cooler, and dual disc brakes with BREMBO calipers in front coupled with the simple but effective drum brake in the rear. All other mechanical, suspension, electrical, and functional aspects of these two models are the same, but viewed side-by-side they could not appear to be more different.
The R100 Mystic offers a sportier seating (3/4 style) and handlebar position (low and wide). The lower seat height and rider ergonomics result in an overall slightly lower center of gravity, making for improved handling when in motion, and easier maneuvering when stopped as the rider’s feet are a bit lower and closer to the pavement. The factory design team opted not to put pinstripes on this bike. The absence of stripes (unusual for BMWs in the day) along with its striking color, dramatically changed the bike’s visual shape and lines. The Mystic was further stylized by its unique, retro style dashboard design: six colored lamps to show turn signals, neutral, high beam, oil pressure, and generator status, neatly placed on either side of the ignition switch. Instrumentation includes a full sized speedometer (120 MPH) and tachometer (7,000 RPM redline). All of this is chrome plated or polished aluminum to compliment the chrome plated headlight bucket, trim ring, housings for the speedo and tach and the left and right headlight brackets.
The seat will accommodate a rider and a petite to average sized passenger, and is surrounded by a painted trim panel that the R100 Classic does not come with. The battery or side cover panels are also of a different shape. One of them holds (hides) the large Allen wrench that allows the owner to remove the two bolts holding the seat in place and provide fast access to the full sized BMW tool kit stored under the seat. All R100s of this era share the same stylish two-into-one exhaust system with a large collector/CAT located under the gearbox.
At just 474 pounds with a full tank of gas (6.3 US Gallons) and all other fluids, and generating a confident 60 HP plus 76 Nm of torque, the Mystic does not lack for power, performance, or fun. More specifications are here.
This motorcycle was made in November of 1994 at the BMW motorcycle factory in Berlin (Spandau), Germany, shipped to the US, delivered to Iron Horse Motorcycles in Tucson, AZ, and then sold on July 11, 1995, to the first and only owner it ever had. It was subsequently serviced by that dealer numerous times over the past 25 years. To this day it remains exactly as it was built: 100% production stock.
Options that were available then and may still be ordered through Bob’s BMW include chromed valve covers, saddlebag mounts, black satin finish saddlebags (same as used on the R100 Classic) and the Multivario tank bag. With a steel gas tank as this bike has, any of the magnetic tank bags Bob’s offers will fit and function wonderfully as well. Aftermarket options might include other luggage as well as windscreens and seats.
There is a Mystic displayed in the Bob’s Vintage BMW Motorcycle Museum that Bob and his son used to ride frequently. While it’s in excellent original cosmetic and mechanical condition (sorry, it’s not for sale), it has double the miles this example has, and is not as perfect either. In fact, until this bike showed up, Bob used to think he owned the cleanest original R100 Mystic anywhere. (Oh well, we must sometimes learn to let go of our illusions.) Anyway, Bob will be the first to tell you that the Mystic is a blast to ride, not to mention its looks which make it a real head-turner when seen in traffic. In our opinion, you are very unlikely to find an R100R Mystic in better all-original cosmetic and mechanical condition than this one. We are very confident that it will continue to increase in value — not to mention riding pleasure.

This motorcycle comes with the original BMW owner’s manual, the complete BMW tool kit and pouch, the original BMW-supplied tire repair kit, plus 2 stock factory BMW keys that fit the ignition, gas cap, and fork lock.
