Description
This great used Classic BMW Touring Bike has LOW miles and has had just ONE Owner!
While not without a few very small blemishes, this is by far the cleanest RT in either the 800 or 1,000 cc designation we’ve had to offer in many years. It is essentially ready to go where you wish to ride, having just passed the Maryland State Safety Inspection (MSI) and been through our service department for a full evaluation and an extended test ride of 14 miles. It has been professionally lowered so that a rider of shorter stature, like Bob at 5’5” (his feet were flat on the ground in street shoes) will have solid footing when stopped for the brief periods their boots are not on the foot pegs and the throttle engaged.
It does have a few general maintenance oriented items we just don’t have the time to address in peak season (but might get to if it stays longer than anticipated and we’ll adjust the price at that time) so it’s a great opportunity for someone with basic skills to spend a weekend or a few evenings bringing the state of maintenance up to a fresh starting point. But it arrived with clean fluids (about 3 years old with almost no miles), a strong battery, tires from 2010 with about 70-75 honest tread remaining (the rear tire shows a little aging in the sidewall) and runs superbly strong in all gears, all RPM ranges and at all reasonable speeds which we test in.
In a perfect world the new owner would change all the fluids sometime in the not too distant future, replace the tires after a few thousand miles, replace the oil pan gasket (starting to weep a little but tightening the bolts may delay that more) and if greater perfection is a requirement have someone paint match the new right battery/side cover in primer which we just installed. One might even remove the screen trim or fill in the gap the first and only owner the bike has ever had selected to remove (common) so it’s not in your line of sight.
Cosmetically we feel that despite a few very minor scratches on the fairing, saddlebag lids, a small crack in the seat cowling (not easy to see with the seat down) and a few very small mars in the pinstripes it looks fantastic up close let alone at five feet. Paint is all original as is the mileage. In addition to the lowering of front and rear suspension but a east coast suspension specialist the stock comfort seat was also shaved down a bit under the stock cover. It is plenty comfortable still and the ride is still very smooth and enjoyable.
There are also a few other extras aside from the custom suspension. The Baker Airwings are a fabulous addition and really help direct more fresh air exactly where the rider and passenger might desire it on the hotter days. The bike has BMW heated grips which worked during our test ride and the factory installed 4-way emergency flashers that also works. It boasts BMW chrome 2-piece cylinder guards with an aftermarket set of folding highway pegs for stretching out on the longer rides.
There is also a period correct aftermarket license plate holder alarm kit which we have NOT tested and DON’T KNOW if it works, but it was there and we’re leaving it in place for the next owner. Then sidestand has been slightly modified so that the bike does not tip as far to the left as they do when originally built; you might like this as much as we do or select to simply grind or cut it off.
The only other flaw we should bring to your attention is that the bike is missing the left side storage compartment door but we have the lock and it matches the ignition keys that also work the gas cap, seat, fork lock and saddlebags. We’ve not attempted to find a used one yet but if we do it will be included in the offer and we’ll adjust the price accordingly unless it costs us $50 bucks or less. Look this one over, think about whether you have the time, inclination and skills to freshen up the fluids and address the oil pan weep.
If you don’t like changing tires we can install a brand new set of your selection at our standard, competitive prices at a time of your choosing a few thousand miles down the road (or sooner if you desire) with a scheduled appointment or as an early bird one Saturday morning (we’d suggest calling service a week in advance to make sure we have those tires set aside for you) and you can share coffee, donuts and conversation with other fun and friendly riders who have been doing this for decades at Bob’s.
We think you’d be hard pressed to find another R100RT, let alone with such low original miles and just one prior owner in shape this perfect. That level of wow includes the plastic components, the windscreen, the driveline castings, the wheels, switches, controls, mirrors and entire exhaust system. This bike has been lightly detailed and will be delivered with the original factory owner’s manual, a complete BMW tool kit and several keys.
