This is a RUNNING PROJECT BIKE that has a great deal to offer on top of its very realistic price. Here’s a highly sought after 1,000 cc Airhead with matching numbers (frame, motor, ID sticker) with very low original miles from just two owners. It boasts clean and shiny original paint on the tank and fenders in a desirable classic finish: Avus Black with red & white pinstripes. More importantly, there’s the simple fact that this PROJECT BIKE starts up and runs fine! It also has some very desirable period-correct upgrades including one you just don’t find very often on bikes of this era – a five-speed transmission equipped with a KICK STARTER! But there’s more — lots more!
As with all PROJECT BIKES we want buyers to know as much as possible about the bike before making a purchase. We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that the new owner for each and every PROJECT BIKE feels they paid fairly and got a good, if not great value in the deal. We encourage people to call, schedule a time to meet with one of our sales advisors and inspect each machine in person so they fully understand all the positives as well as the potential downsides involved in the refurbishing process. We’re proud to have sold well over a hundred PROJECT BIKES since beginning the program some years ago. Our aim with these bikes — indeed, with all the bikes we sell — is exceptional customer satisfaction. By that measure, our PROJECT BIKES have proven to be an overwhelming success. We’ve even taken a few of them back in trade as good used bikes after their owners finished doing all the work and then enjoyed riding the bikes for a number of years.

We’ll start with this running PROJECT BIKE’s flaws before we share all the great stuff: the paint on the frame is showing its age, the front discs even at this low miles are right at the minimum spec but very serviceable, the seat has some rust on the underside, there is some rust on assorted hardware, a little on the axles too. The battery is strong but dates to 2016; these Odyssey batteries last a long time if tended to and this one has been. The tires are from 2015 and installed at Bob’s in June of 2016 and have superb sidewalls and look like they might have had only 100 miles of use. The aluminum could use a good cleaning to look fresher, there’s a small flat spot in the rear wheel (see it between the rear shock and swingarm in the left-side full photo) but does not cause any vibration and the tire seal is perfect and the front crossover pipe is rusty; we think you can spot all other small issues including a little oil weepage on the left side of the engine that does not affect the overall stability, operation, safety or general roadworthiness of this PROJECT BIKE in the supplied high quality images.
So we feel the great stuff installed or included with this running PROJECT BIKE far outweighs any of the blemishes or things that may require your time and attention before riding to the BMWMOA National Rally in Montana this June. The paint is in very good shape on the tank and fenders as initially mentioned, and it is original factory work. The inside of the gas tank is spotless and it has a rare, near perfect original gas cap with the correct ring and a lock that works with the same key that starts the bike, locks the seat and the forks. The seat is in very good original condition with the correct black trim and the chrome passenger grab rail; there’s even a BMW gas tank roundel on the back for added identity. The gauges are clean, clear and everything works including the trip-meter reset plus this one has the electronic KATDASH upgrade so all the lights work and are brighter and far more dependable than the originals ever were.
Now let’s get further into the included EXTRAS with this PROJECT BIKE: It sports a San Jose Fork Brace, a Reynolds Ride-Off center stand, a Parabellum windscreen (easily removed in the hottest weather if desired), full coverage BMW fork boots (11 rib design), dual FIAMM horns (high & low tones), original BMW replacement mufflers w/o the later EPA imprint on the sides in excellent condition, factory dual disc brakes featuring Brembo calipers, factory snowflake cast alloy mag wheels with the desirable drum rear brake, BMW 2-piece cylinder guards, and even what appears to be a full set of original control cables wire tied to the frame and sub-frame for emergency use.
And then there’s this: The kick starter upgrade on this running PROJECT BIKE did not come from the factory, this was an upgrade installed by the original owner using new, correct BMW parts and having the work done at a now non-existent BMW specialist in the region; not an inexpensive addition. Bob’s did a rear wheel bearing service in 2016 and another local shop replaced the steering head bearings the same year. Bing carb floats and gaskets were replaced by the customer with parts purchased at Bob’s also in 2016. There is a receipt for a new clutch being installed a round 1988 about the time the kick-start conversion was added but no precise miles. In 2011 around 19,400 miles Bob’s BMW resealed the gearbox and replaced those problematic, pesky, shift and detent springs along with a few other small related parts. Aside from that it has just seen fairly regular oil and filter changes and not nearly as much riding as the bike would love to see in the future.
This PROJECT BIKE starts, shifts, idles and runs very well. The brakes work fine and all the lights, switches and horns operate. The stock suspension still has some life left in it but if we were going to be the next owner we’d upgrade to maintain the best possible handling and add some extra life to these tires and the next set – and nothing beats new suspension and the knowledgeable parts experts at Bob’s can make recommendations in all price ranges. Fluids are clean but we don’t know when they were last changed, so if you like a fresh starting point, ask the parts team to put a full package together – you’ll get a discount on all of it including a new battery, suspension, rubber parts and anything else you purchase for this PROJECT BIKE at Bob’s.
This PROJECT BIKE comes with a tool tray and cover, one BMW folding knob key and one BMW flat spare key. There is no tool kit, tire repair kit or owner’s manual included. So, don’t hesitate. The roads are waiting! The small number of maintenance tasks you might want to do before enjoying the season you could easily accomplish in one weekend. Contact Bob’s TODAY!
