This is perhaps the cleanest, lowest mile K100RT we have had the honor to offer in decades. This beauty features original paint (except mirrors) and has been cared for and loved by just one owner since it was sold new on January 4, 1985, here in Baltimore, Maryland, by Motor Sport Center (a dealership that’s now closed). The 600 mile or break-in service was performed by the same dealer on May 8, 1986 at 611 miles. We are also pleased to share that both Bob’s Used Parts (started in 1981/2) and Bob’s BMW (1990/91) were involved with the supply for and care of the machine over the next three decades after MSC closed their doors.
This machine starts easily, idles smoothly, shifts up and down the gear range near effortlessly, handles exceptionally well, stops solidly, smoothly and with confidence and all other systems like switches, lighting, horns, etc. operate perfectly; it is a pleasure to ride and we know upon inspection and a test ride (available to qualified applicants) you will agree with this statement. To dial in the low miles this one has, the record miles on a K75 or K100 sold at Bob’s BMW over the years, under the very same conditions this one is offered at, stands at 251,000 miles – these in-line 3 and 4 cylinder BMW’s are legendary for many good reasons.
When it arrived all but the most recent service were up to date but it had not been ridden as much over the past few years as it was earlier in its life, low mile example that it is. So bringing all services, maintenance and safe/road worthy items up to our high standards was undertaken. We ran it through the Maryland safety Inspection and all that needed to be done here for a pass was to remove the rear passenger pegs and place them in the tool tray as this bike is currently equipped with a Corbin Gunfighter solo seat which has not space for a passenger or any grab handles.
The tires it arrived with passed and had lots of tread but were old; this BMW now boasts a new set of Metzeler Lasertecs. We installed a new Odyssey battery, changed the coolant fluid and crankcase gasket and bushings, adjusted the seat locking latch, replaced the riders peg rubbers and the shift rubber for good measure. All other fluids and filters were changed (or cleaned) immediately prior to us having the opportunity to acquire this very fine sport touring Beemer with many desirable extras.
This silver K100RT has a like new Corbin Gunfighter seat (if you’d prefer an equally like new Dual Canyon Sport so you can take a passenger and reinstall the rear pegs please ask the sales team to get Bob in the conversation as he might consider swapping his even up – there’s another customer swap story here). It also has the complete set of BMW touring luggage including a pair of BMW Integral saddlebags with two (#042) keys, a rear 22 liter trunk (2 keys) with a passenger backrest pad, the correct, original and very useful BMW saddlebag liners (sorry none for the trunk), a 14” long auxiliary brake light attached to the trunk.
If that was not enough then you should note it also has a Telefix fork brace, a K&N Air filter, Progressive fork springs and a Progressive rear shock. It has a near new condition BMW acrylic screen which was offered much later than when this bike was produced; it has better air flow and coverage and is simply more durable than the early screens. And for your listening pleasure there’s a marine brand and grade stereo with cassette player (hey, it was current then) connected to the built-in but optional BMW radio kit housing (left locking fairing pocket), speakers and antenna with a handlebar mounted remote control. It also has the black factory cylinder or crash guards that are also as clean as this machine and a difficult to obtain item these days.
There are a few very small cosmetic blemishes on this K100RT which barely show up in these quality photos; we highly suggest an in-person inspection for this. We can tell you that at some point the mirrors were replaced or at least re-painted as the silver has a little more blue in it than the stock color but this is not particularly noticeable. The side covers have had the internal (back of cover) mounting tabs repaired; these were done very well based on our experience and is pretty common – we’ll show you how to remove and install them safely when you take delivery.
We are tough when it comes to ratings but gave this machine a 8.5 on cosmetics at arrival and now feel it is at least the 9.0 it now has on the same form; it may be a very honest 9.5 but we’ll let you decide. Mechanically it was rated 8.5 and now has a solid 9.5 on the same tough rating form; all completed by Bob. Even the wheels and the entire exhaust system which frequently suffer from tire changes and age are in fabulous condition. This bike shines everywhere and clearly has benefitted from one good owners care and garage storage when not being ridden; a through, professional detailing here at Bob’s before being placed on the sales floor simply made it look much closer to a new bike despite its 36 year age. You will be hard pressed to find another motorcycle that offers so much for this kind of money
Finally, as a one owner, well cared for bike it will be delivered with two (2) original BMW keys (1 folding and 1 flat) to fit the ignition, fork lock, seat lock and gas cap plus the original BMW Proof of Ownership, Warranty Coverage, Dealer Directory and Owner’s Manual all in excellent condition. Let us know if you desire to discuss the possible seat swap as well.
