When BMW designers set out to create a “naked” version of the new G310 series of single cylinder, lightweight, entry level machines, they truly hit a HOME RUN with the ‘R’ model. (This is even more remarkable considering that these German designers probably never hit a baseball in their lives!) Seriously, anyone catching a glimpse of one these stylish roadsters is struck by how appealing they are, with lines and shapes that form a perfect balance; powerful without being aggressive, sexy and stylish without being frivolous, fast without being reckless, and functional without being boring.
But take it for a ride and YOU will feel like you just hit a home run too. That balance is not just in its looks. It extends to the performance on the road too. Fun, versatile, nimble; with speed, reliability, control, the confidence of ABS Brakes, and astounding economy offered in equal measure. This G310R is in nearly perfect condition. Our cosmetic evaluation came back all 9s and 10s. The most finicky observers will note two tiny scratches: one on the clutch lever and one on the right-side bar-end. Also, on the left-side seat surround, a very small bit of the Motorsport graphic appliqué has been chipped off. These things are barely noticeable, but we thought you should know. Remember, there’s less than 1200 miles on it — for all intents and purposes, it’s still a new bike. And we hardly need to point out how AFFORDABLE this machine is. It’s not every day you find this much bike for so few bucks.
This bike has had only one owner, of course. It wasn’t purchased at Bob’s, but its owner brought it to us for the scheduled 600 mile “break-in” service — though, at around a thousand miles on the clock, he was a little late for that maintenance. Nevertheless, we did all the required service, along with a brake fluid change, and did a thorough check of everything else too. All good. This bike is splendid. But a funny thing happened. Apparently while its owner was browsing around in our showroom during the time his service was being completed, he decided to trade up to a larger BMW! (OK, well there’s an example of why these are considered “entry level” models.) But whether you’re an “entry level” rider or someone with a lot more experience, you’ll be glad to know that we took it for an extended test ride and it also passed the rigorous Maryland Safety Inspection.
