In 2012, BMW brought out a special Rally edition of its iconic line of GS motorcycles to mark a significant moment: the culmination of development on the air/oil-cooled boxer engine. (The following year would see a breakthrough: the first liquid-cooled R1200GS, the so-called “Water Boxer.”) But by this time the evolved air/oil-cooled boxer model boasted many improvements such as double overhead cams, which resulted in both higher torque and higher horsepower, and the “EVO” ABS II brake system, as well as proven components like the twin spark ignition system, and Telelever front and Paralever rear suspension systems. For the R1200GS, torque was given higher priority than output in line with practical considerations. And you can feel it. Then there was the wide range of special equipment features such as the unique off-road ESA Electronic Suspension Adjustment). As Total Cycle put it in their review: the 2012 R1200GS… “is not just able to handle everything, it is actually built to do so. And in this synthesis of easy handling, supreme touring suitability, off-road potential and comfort for rider and pillion passenger, there’s simply no other motorcycle which does it better. That’s not just what we think: it’s the result of independent tests worldwide.”
As for making a visual impact, the Rally Edition bike with its beautiful Alpine White paint, accented with BMW’s distinctive Motorsport graphics, and offset by the bright RED frame, stands out from the crowd like few other bikes ever could. Just take a good look at this one. Its appearance alone makes it a first place winner even before the engines have been started.
Like any well loved BMW, this bike was as well cared for as it was well ridden. Its previous and only owner brought it to Bob’s for regular service intervals. But in between those maintenance visits, the bike was RIDDEN. And let’s just point out that used bikes that are actually used for their intended purpose stand a much better chance of being in better mechanical condition than the ones that sit idle in garages for long periods — though they may look a little prettier. We gave this machine a very thorough inspection prior to releasing it for sale, we found no signs of abuse or unusual wear. The rear brake rotor and pads measured at a little below spec so we replaced them with new. Other than that, the bike proved to be in excellent mechanical condition with all components and functions tested to perform at or above factory specifications. It was due for a Bi-annual Service so we did that – including changing engine oil & filter, final drive oil, and brake fluid, a valve adjustment and throttle body sync. Then we filled the tires with nitrogen for better performance. All service work was performed by our BMW Master Certified Technicians.
This motorcycle is well equipped for whatever type of adventure you wish to undertake. Most notably, it’s equipped with BMW’s awesome and rugged VARIO Side Cases and Top Case, each expandable to match your cargo-carrying needs. It has top-of-the-line Clearwater Auxiliary Lighting — nice! — and a Centech AP-2 Relay Kit installed, a very useful upgrade. But perhaps most important to the rider who really RIDES, this bike comes with Öhlins shocks front and rear. These are, of course, the best suspension components available, and when combined with electronic adjustability as these are, well, you just can’t ask for more. There’s more good stuff too. Be sure to look over the list under the Features tab.
Cosmetically, you might notice a few marks on the wheels, maybe from roadside tire changes. There are some boot scuff marks on the seat, some corrosion on the crossover and header pipes, and a few other minor signs of real-life daily use typical for its age and mileage. Overall, however, this bike is in remarkably good condition.
What else would you need to know about this bike before getting to Bob’s as fast as possible to buy it before someone else does? Well, as we mentioned, it has been thoroughly serviced and tested for performance, safety, and road-worthiness, it has been professionally detailed so it looks as good as it possibly can, and it has passed Maryland State Inspection so, after you buy it, all you need to do is start it and ride away. This bike comes with two keys, original owners book, and the factory tool kit.
