When this 2011 BMW R1200RT came to us, we thought its visible wear and tear was a bit more severe than its moderate mileage (less than 13,000) would suggest. But we also saw that underneath that patina was a great machine just waiting to offer someone a rich second life of riding experiences. First, however, our in-house professional detailer would need to show it some tough love. The results were amazing, and though there are still a few signs of its previous use, the bike cleaned up to an overall 8.5, with much of it rating a 9+ on our very critical cosmetics grading scale.
Looks matter to most riders, but they don’t usually matter the most. So you’d be quite right to wonder what this motorcycle can DO. How well does it run, what are its features?
To start with, you should know the R1200RT has, for many years, set the standard for durable, comfortable, versatile touring motorcycles. High-performance that perfectly suits a more sporting style of touring is built in, and it comes from the workhorse 1170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine with double overhead cams, paired with BMW’s famous Telelever front & Paralever rear suspension that provides precise and confident handling without sacrificing compliance and comfort.
This machine comes equipped with an abundance of features: ESA II (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), the BMW on-board computer, the best ABS brakes in the business, spacious removable side cases, electronically adjustable windscreen, heated grips, heated seat, audio system with radio and Bluetooth interface, and electronic cruise control. The bike is a total pleasure to ride in any type of weather or road conditions. When you’re on board an R1200RT, there’s no stopping you.
Mechanically we found the bike to run and operate as designed. ABS (including front and rear brake), Clutch, Idle, Gearbox, Instruments and Steering all feel and sound great. We performed a full 12K/Annual service on it that includes engine oil and filter, air filter replacement, rear drive fluid replacement, gearbox oil, valve clearance check and adjustment, all spark plugs replaced, front and rear brake fluid renewed. Additionally, we replaced the cover and seal on the front brake fluid reservoir, replaced a couple of burned-out bulbs, adjusted some body panels that had been previously installed improperly, applied a fuel system cleaner/treatment, mounted a new front tire, and filled both tires with nitrogen for better wear and performance. We did an extended test ride, of course, to assure that all was safe, correct, and performing at or better than factory spec. We also ran the bike through our tough 38 point Pre-Purchase inspection the rigorous Maryland State Inspection, both of which the bike passed with flying colors.
As mentioned above, our professional detailer spent several hours on this bike and it made big difference to the appearance. We would recommend that with any motorcycle (any vehicle, really) one should get a yearly detail as it goes a long way to maintaining the cosmetic value and keeping the original shine. Over the young 13,000 miles this bike has seen, there are, of course, some paint chips and a small scratches that would be the natural results of typical use, including one or two inevitable tip-overs. The marks visible on the side cases are perhaps the most noticeable cosmetic flaws. We like to think that all this simply shows the pleasure someone had riding this RT over the last 8 years. But we do want to be up front that this RT is not quite a 10. It is very clean; a very nice model that looks great — and the matte finish Ostra Grey Metallic paint is a particularly handsome color.
