And some possess all these qualities. The Ducati 996 is one such motorcycle. This Ducati 996S (the S model is endowed with rear Öhlins Suspension) is over twenty years old, yet it has only 12,000 miles on it. While you can clearly see from the photos that it is in VERY GOOD condition, we’ll be the first ones to tell you that the bike is not a museum piece. There is evidence of normal wear on it that’s easy to see. None of it is bad or serious; the bike was simply RIDDEN as it was intended to be. We interpret it as a good sign — that its sole previous owner enjoyed riding it! Museums are nice, but when we see the rare bike of this vintage that looks like it spent its whole life displayed in one, it’s nothing more than an amusing curiosity — because motorcycles AREN’T museum pieces. They’re meant to get us from Point A to Point Z with something beyond yawning comfort or boring efficiency. EXCITEMENT is why we ride! There are just a few cosmetic issues we should mention; and we’re confident you’ll agree after you look at the bike in person, these are very minor things you’ll barely notice. There is a tiny dent and a scratch on the front left-hand side of the tank. There are a few scratches on the left turn signal housing and scratches on the lower left fairing which the previous owner touched up. These appear to be the result of a mild tip-over incident. That’s about it. So ride on without a care!
When this bike came into our Service Department to prepare it for sale, all eyes were fixed on it. Who will get to work on it? Who will get to test ride it? Everyone wanted to lay their hands on it, but as is often the case, seniority won out. Thus, our most experienced technicians took on the enviable task of bringing this awesome motorcycle back to its pinnacle of mechanical condition. The bike had had its last scheduled maintenance – a 12K service – in 2018 and since then, less than 500 miles had been ridden on it. Nevertheless, we thoroughly examined every component, and checked all its performance and safety functions to be sure everything measured at or better than factory spec. We gave the bike fresh engine oil and a new oil filter, replaced its high performance air filter, replaced its spark plugs, installed a new, lightweight Shorai Lithium-Iron Battery, and to make future maintenance easier for its next owner, also installed a quick-connect Battery Tender harness. We gave it NEW TIRES: Michelin Power 5, front & rear.
Also please NOTE: this Ducati 996S boasts the original Öhlins rear suspension! (Showa forks up front.) And there are some other very sweet EXTRAS: a full Termignoni Exhaust with carbon fiber canisters, and carbon fiber fenders front and rear. The previous owner also added an auxiliary LED tail/brake light.
The only previous owner of this grand machine is a good friend and long-time customer of ours. We know that he treated the bike well, and there were certainly no signs of abuse or damage. There was only, as mentioned previously, some typical evidence of joyful riding. And though the bike was garaged its entire life, it was ridden very little in recent years, and that can lead to certain predictable consequences. Luckily, all of these were found and fixed without much fuss. It was necessary to install a new Low Fuel Sensor, a Fuel Pump, and an ECU along with all the related gaskets and O-rings. We used all brand new, original Ducati parts in these procedures. What has emerged after this little renaissance is a Ducati sportbike that performs as magnificently as it did when new. It absolutely thrilled the lucky ones on Bob’s staff who were able to test ride it; and we are sure it will thrill you too.
This motorcycle went through and passed the rigorous Maryland State Safety Inspection. It positively glows after the deep cleaning and detailing given it by our in-house pro, whose meticulous work speaks for itself. It comes with two keys and the original owner’s books.
