Here’s a GREAT used machine from the past that’s a superb value in all possible ways. It has had just two owners since new, has been very well cared for mechanically and cosmetically over the years, and shows no signs of ever being stored outside. It recently had thorough maintenance and refreshing prior to its arrival at Bob’s, where it then received even further attention that brought it up to our high standards.

While it is 34 years of age, thus considered a classic, we don’t consider it “old” as it only has a moderate 18,376 miles on the clock. When the bike came to us, Bob was the lucky one who took it out for its initial 16 mile evaluation ride before rolling it on a lift and going over the bike with his very critical two page checklist. Anyone considering this as a next sport-tourer or touring bike should know that it is safe, roadworthy, dependable and comfortable. We believe it can easily deliver decades and tens of thousands of miles of enjoyable service to the next owner if simply cared for and maintained as it has been up to this point. These early K models continue to demonstrate that they could be around into the next century. By way of example: Bob owns a 1985 K100RS (sister model to the K100RT) with a custom EML sidecar attached which places a lot more load on the driveline, and he’s ridden it across the country three times in the past decade!

In January of 2019 the fuel pump was replaced along with most all the related bits like the strainer, vibration damper, filter and some connectors. The gas cap gasket was also replaced at the same time. Prior to that and arrival at Bob’s it had the steering head bearings replaced, fork fluid changed and new Dunlop tires with fresh BMW valve stems installed by another BMW dealer outside Maryland. The tires date from mid-2017 and easily have 90% of their serviceable safe tread remaining and the sidewalls are in new/excellent shape. The only mechanical item we found to not to be working is the electronic clock inside the instrument cluster. This is not an uncommon malady. Many owners of early K bikes, including Bob, simply rely on their GPS or phone to tell the time.

In our service operation we did the following: A full Annual service which includes brakes, coolant and all gear oils (fork fluid was not replaced as it was quite fresh), we installed a new BMW front master cylinder as it was showing early signs of some light weeping, we installed EBC brake pads all around — the old ones still had plenty of pad material but were getting old and we wanted the rotors to remain in top condition, we replaced the rear brake master cylinder or pump plus the hose and clamps, and then ran it through the tough Maryland Safety Inspection, which it passed thus certifying the machine is safe and roadworthy.

Cosmetically this is a very impressive machine and still boasts original paint from head to tail. It is not without a few flaws, however, which we wish to bring to your attention. There is a small hole which has been filled with a medium soft/hard putty below the right front turn signal on the fairing – the bike literally fell on a garden tool a year earlier and you’ll also see some stress cracks in that area.  A very small spot on the edge of the otherwise beautiful tall tinted windscreen is showing a bit of coating de-lamination. There are a few small cracks in the edge of the very comfortable Corbin seat, this is not uncommon after so many years. One saddlebag has a short section of internal trim that has damage which is also not uncommon after so many years, but the bags are solid, serviceable and very clean. Importantly, all the locks work fine.

Overall you will find the paint to be in very good condition with a fine luster. Control switches, rubber, cables, lines and hoses are in great shape. The exhaust system, both wheels, and hardware are all impressively bright. In fact, the engine and drivetrain castings are all in exceptionally fine condition with near zero evidence of the typical surface discoloration found on most bikes of this age. Again, this machine has been well cared for its whole life, and never needed cosmetic or mechanical refurbishing let alone restoration. Anyone looking for a ready-to-go, turn-key BMW for local riding or cross country travels and everything in between will be duly impressed.

A rider will notice right away that this motorcycle starts, idles, shifts, handles and stops superbly. The clutch proves to be solid as a rock from all the testing we performed. It really rides wonderfully and the suspension feels very fresh despite mostly being original, but again it has low miles. You can ride this bike with confidence, solo or two up, at any speed you’re comfortable with. Bob noted that at the end of his test ride he took this bike up to an indicated 105 mph (traffic just sort of wasn’t there and, thankfully, neither were the local police) and it was smooth and still had power to deliver. Whether used as a daily commuter or on a good long trip, you will enjoy becoming intimately familiar with this fine machine.

It comes complete with the original BMW tool kit, the original BMW owner’s manual, the BMW tire repair kit, a Haynes service manual and several keys. Please note there is no key for the gas cap lock (this could be updated at a reasonable cost at Bob’s) and only 1 key for the handsome set of BMW Integral Cases (saddlebags) which are of course included in this offering.
