Description
If you’re looking for a Classic Airhead that needs just a minimal amount of work to get back on the road for a summer of safe and joyful riding — OR — a Classic Airhead to become the basis of a successful and glorious (and not too difficult) full restoration, HERE is a PROJECT BIKE with the potential to be both! The engine starts, idles, and runs well. It’s got good accessories, and it boasts mostly original paint in very good condition. When you take a close look at these photos, you’ll realize that this bike has great bones and huge potential. Of course, we’re sure you’ll want to inspect this PROJECT BIKE in person. May we suggest you do it SOON. Call 1-888-269-2627 to speak with one of our BMW Certified Sales Advisors — Jim, Todd, or David. Do it TODAY!
As with all PROJECT BIKES we want buyers to know as much as possible about the bike before making a purchase. We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that the new owner for each and every PROJECT BIKE feels they paid fairly and got a good, if not great value in the deal. We encourage people to call, schedule a time to meet with one of our sales advisors and inspect each machine in person so they fully understand all the positives as well as the potential downsides involved in the refurbishing process. Please take a moment to learn more about Bob’s PROJECT BIKE program and read our general disclaimer HERE.
This R100/7 had been sitting in a garage, unridden and lonely, for at least two years before it came to us. On our first examination it would not start. After some further trials, we gave it a NEW BATTERY, did a cleaning and partial rebuild of the carburetors, fed it some fresh gas, and … VROOM! That’s when we discovered, to our pleasant surprise, how well it actually runs. As a PROJECT BIKE, of course, it will need other maintenance done before it’s ready for the road. According to our technicians, its primary problem is that the front brake caliper does not perform properly and needs to be rebuilt. Most of its other issues could fall under the category of general, routine maintenance. It has a few minor oil leaks and weeps, and it needs a full fluid & filter change and a tune-up. Other items that may need replacing are the tachometer cable, neutral switch (or the indicator bulb), the brake light switch, and a few rubber parts here and there. The tires have plenty of tread, but they are too old to be considered safe and should be replaced. Lastly, the fuel cap is probably a goner too. But none of these small problems should be at all surprising for a bike of this age and mileage. And it’s all the kind of work that a lot of our customers who are experienced Airhead owners and tinkerers like to do in their garages on a Saturday morning.
1977 was the first year of the “Slash 7” (/7) series, and the first year that BMW’s iconic Boxer engine was offered in the bigger 1,000 cc displacement. This color, Burnt Orange Metallic, was one of only five color options offered that year. The paint on the tank and rear fender is original and still in amazingly good condition. The front fender appears to have been repainted, but a fairly good job was done. The battery side covers, which would have also been painted in the body color, are missing. But the overall cosmetic condition of this bike puts it far above average for this vintage, and that’s what makes it such an excellent candidate for a full restoration. If such a restoration were done properly, this PROJECT BIKE could certainly turn out to be a prize winner. There is even a full, original tool kit that is only missing its vinyl roll-up pouch to make it complete. Accessories include a Reynolds Passenger backrest, a chrome rear luggage rack and black engine protection bars from Butler & Smith (the authorized BMW importer in the US at the time), and a small, handlebar-mounted windscreen, probably by National Cycle. These are all useful add-ons for daily riding and appropriate for longer distance travel as well.
We’re very happy to be able to offer this PROJECT BIKE because we know how special it is, and because we know that in the right hands, this bike will be reborn to bring pride and pleasure to its owner for many years to come. Don’t MISS OUT. Call Bob’s NOW!
