So you want something sensible. But it has to be something of quality and character. It doesn’t have to be the fastest or the latest thing, but not too old either — maybe like an Oilhead boxer — just modern enough to be easy to own. You DON’T want some mint-condition collector’s item because, after all, why pay for a museum artifact that you won’t take out of the garage for fear of something happening that would devalue it! No, you’re looking for a reliable bike at a reasonable price that you can actually ride and enjoy every day without worry.
Well, look no further; your bike is right here. With saddlebags, tank bag, engine protection bars, foot peg lowering kit, windshield with adjustable upper deflector, and supplemental instrumentation (see the Key Features tab for more details), it’s certainly well equipped for pleasant rides of any duration — to the corner café or coast-to-coast. Its air and oil-cooled 70 horsepower, 4-valve per cylinder boxer twin engine is smooth and reliable with ample power to carry you and your gear over the mountain without breathing hard. Add to that the famed BMW Telelever front- and Paralever rear-suspension for precise and predictable handling and you’ve got all the competence you need to inspire confidence.
Mechanically, this 848 cc boxer is robust and ready; we checked everything, replaced the worn parts it required (including fuel hoses, steering damper, wire harness wrappings), renewed all its fluids and filters, and installed NEW TIRES front & back (Metzeler Z8). It passed Maryland Safety Inspection without a hitch. More importantly, it passed the even more critical judgement of our senior BMW Certified Master Technician who took it for an extended test ride, then confidently declared, “This bike runs and rides GREAT!” (He’s a man of few words, so when he says ANYTHING about a bike we consider it meaningful information!)
On the cosmetic side of things, the bike is perfectly clean and tidy; we promise that. And see for yourself, it looks pretty darn good for a 24-year-old! Frankly, you don’t have to squint to notice that it also shows typical signs of its age and miles and we’re not shying away from the truth about it. You’ll find some tip-over scratches on the crash bars and valve covers, some scuffs and nicks on the saddlebag lids, a few paint nicks and surface rust splotches — but none of this significantly disfigures what is otherwise a handsome bike. So rather than doing a full restoration on this near-classic, we thought you’d probably rather have the LOWER PRICE that goes along with the few scratches and other little badges of experience it proudly wears right now. Because you want a sensible bike to ride — and this is it.
This BMW R850R comes with two keys, original owner’s books, and factory tool kit. It is completely ready right now to fulfill your dreams of an easy-going Autumn Escape.
