Description

Rare and Beautiful!  Feast your eyes on this hard-to-find and very desirable Do-It-All Beemer from years past. The R100GS is a true classic, but good used ones are so rare because most owners have ridden them into the ground — that’s how they’re designed to be used. So finding clean, low-mileage ones that have been clearly well cared for by its few previous owners, not to mention upgraded and fully serviced, gets harder every day. While this one did not arrive nearly as perfect as it is now, it came to us in very nice, mostly original condition, ready for the expertise the service team at Bob’s BMW offers to turn it into the beauty you see now on your screen.

Starting with a thorough inspection, review, visual and mechanical detailed evaluation, a good test ride and more involving two of the most knowledgeable members of our team we created a medium list of service requirements to bring it up to our very high standards. The goal: the next owner should be getting a desirable classic BMW that is as turnkey as can be purchased as well as one that would visually turn heads even more than it did upon arrival. And we’ve watched this category of machines not only go up in value but get harder and harder to find – even in rough condition.

So here’s what we did to get it to those high standards that the next proud owner can not only get current value out of but additional value farther down the road from. And prior to arrival it had seen a complete service on all fluids and filters. It now has brand new Metzeler Tourance tires filled with Nitrogen, it has had a full carburetor rebuild including not only the standard gaskets and o-rings but butterfly shaft screws, vacuum screws, float pivot pins, carb top screws, slide needles & clips, fresh carb-to-head rubbers and more. We’ve also re-torqued the heads, adjusted the valves, replaced valve cover gaskets, synced the carbs to a perfect idle and throttle action and even installed a fresh timing plug rubber.

We’ve replaced the fuel lines with fresh, correct braided lines as when this bike was new and added inline fuel filters for extra protection for those freshly serviced carbs. We installed a fresh rear license plate bracket (it was missing) with the correct red 80mm red reflectors and a brand new BMW rear tail lamp assembly as this one was cracked. We’ve installed a new set of spark plug wires and plug caps with rubber boots top (by the coils) and bottom (by the plugs) and fresh BMW W7D spark plugs.  We renewed the speedo cable boot as these are prone to allowing water into the gearbox when they are left in place too long. And to not only make it stop better but to add some long term value, we’ve installed a fresh BMW front brake disc and pads.

Following all this the bike received a final inspection, another road test and was issued a fresh Maryland Safety Inspection certificate. Then it went to our professional in-house detailer for some TLC to make an already very good looking, clean in general machine shine even brighter.  While it is not without a few minor nicks and scratches from 24 years of light use we think most anyone who sees it will be highly impressed upon even the closest inspection. There is no rusty hardware, there is no oxidized aluminum on the alloy castings or the beautiful and strong edge spoke wheels. The paint on the frame and body panels is really in great condition as are the small number of chrome bits these models had. We even added a brand new (just a few were left to be found in BMW’s inventory) windscreen so the view forward cannot be clearer.

All rubber parts, cables, exhaust system, mirrors, grips, stands, bag mounts and the sturdy and good looking aftermarket luggage rack are also in excellent condition. The seat looks almost new from all sides including underneath and the foam feels sturdy, firm and lightly flexible as it should to be in good serviceable shape. This one shows no signs of ever being abused or even dropped. The saddlebags are also in great condition and are the later variety with the ignition-size keys and locks. One shows a very small repair around a lock where a stress crack appeared which was fairly common for quite a few years due to the factory rivets being a little tight. The original graphics have held up nicely and there’s even a small modification we know about that others may or may not even notice.

Complete with 2 keys and the factory tool kit which is stored under the seat in the stock tool tray with snap-on lid, this one is going to make someone very happy!
