Description

This very good looking, clean, nice running R90/6 PROJECT BIKE needs almost nothing to be reborn as the Airhead classic you’ve been yearning to own. It’s got low/moderate miles and has had just two owners; one for the last 45 years. It’s nicely accessorized too! Wanna know more RIGHT NOW? Then call 1-888-269-2627 to speak with one of our BMW Certified Sales Advisors —Jim, or Todd. Call TODAY!

As with all PROJECT BIKES we want buyers to know as much as possible about the bike before making a purchase. We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that the new owner for each and every PROJECT BIKE feels they paid fairly and got a good, if not great value in the deal. We encourage people to call, schedule a time to meet with one of our sales advisors and inspect each machine in person so they fully understand all the positives as well as the potential downsides involved in the refurbishing process. Please take a moment to learn more about Bob’s PROJECT BIKE program and read our general disclaimer HERE.

But this motorcycle is not like most of our PROJECT BIKES. There is really just one basic reason it’s not a featured classic among our other prime pre-owned offerings. The odometer is not functioning properly and that causes it to fail Maryland Safety Inspection (MSI).Thus, we do not know the precise original mileage. The instrument reads 24,432 miles but the actual mileage is presumed to be around 32,000. That number is based on the owner’s records and his signed statement. Our full examination of this bike also supports that level of miles. Right now our service department doesn’t have the time to remove the instrument cluster, disassemble it and send the speedo out for repair — and so it becomes your “project” to do that. Then, with a working odometer, the bike should handily pass MSI.

In addition to what you can see in these photos, we have a valuable list of what you can’t see in or on this PROJECT BIKE; please don’t hesitate to ask for it. We really believe it has been well cared for despite having not been ridden much in the past decade. The tires have about 95% of their tread left, with very good sidewalls too, but they date to 2014 and so, technically, are considered near the end of their service life and due for replacement soon. In 2010 a new DENSO starter was installed, as were new Progressive Suspension fork springs and rear shocks. A Heated Grip kit was added in 2012, along with a new Stainless Steel Exhaust System. louder-than-stock horns were added in 2015, a new Odyssey Battery in 2016 – still going strong, and in 2018 a complete new clutch assembly was installed. There is a lot of added value here!

Everything we could check and test on this PROJECT BIKE, aside from the odometer, functions just as it should. Switches, lights, horns, locks, ignition, stands, levers, pedals, etc., are all fine. The engine starts and idles well, the gearbox shifts smoothly up and down the 5-speed range. NOTE: this model is equipped with a KICKSTARTER, standard only on 1974 models and optional after that. The single front disc rotor (still passes MSI/BMW minimum spec – though only be a little) and the rear drum brake together bring the bike to a solid, smooth stop when engaged.

There are other optional extras installed on this motorcycle that make it even more desirable. Those include BMW/Krauser saddlebags, a Rifle sport fairing with tall screen, Flanders Engine Protection Bars, Reynolds bag mounts and rear luggage rack combination, Reynolds “Ride-Off” centerstand, a Corbin Canyon Dual Sport saddle, Stainless Steel header pipes and mufflers in correct BMW style, and R90S style enamel tank roundel emblems. Few PROJECT BIKES come with such nice, bonus add-ons!

Is the bike cosmetically perfect? Well, of course not. It is, after all, a 47 year old machine and some imperfections are to be expected. So you will find some assorted small nicks, dings, and scratches on this PROJECT BIKE and a few stains on the wheel rims; but nothing really serious. There is a non-stock oil fill plug on the final drive that seems to function normally (we tested it) and there is a small oil weep/seep on the clutch actuating arm at the back of the transmission whose cause has not been fully identified. We want you to look over the images closely; or better yet, call and schedule an appointment to come in to see for yourself. This also gives us the opportunity to point out all the pluses along with the small number of minuses that characterize this special offering.

The next owner gets this gem with three keys that fit the ignition, fork, and seat locks, plus two keys for the saddlebags. There is a pretty complete BMW tool kit and a coverless Clymer service/repair manual; but there is no owner’s manual or tire repair kit with this PROJECT BIKE, and while there is an original tire pump, it didn’t seem to function when we tried it — one more easy project to conquer.
