For the past 5 years, Bob’s BMW has been closed on both Thursday and Friday to focus more on the true spirit of Thanksgiving—our families, friends, and riding motorcycles—instead of hitting the shopping malls (#optoutsideon2wheels). Hosting our Black Friday group ride and lunch with the 40 or so people who join us each year has been a lot of fun, and the festive atmosphere at the dealership on Saturday has been the best way to kick off the holiday season. So we’re sticking with those plans this year, but with a few adjustments.
Bob and others on the Bob’s team will still be riding on Friday, but we will not be leading a group ride. Who knows what roads we’ll be enjoying? We encourage you to explore some beautiful roads on your own and enjoy smiles and miles on two wheels or three or even four.
Eventually you’ll want to grab some food and if you’re in our general area, consider joining Bob and others around 12-12:30 for lunch at Cured in downtown Columbia, MD*. We will be seated separately but some conversation will be possible—Cured is ready for as many of us that can make it, all with proper spacing and ventilation. And there’s a huge covered parking garage where your bike or car will be safe and with more fresh air should you wish to kick tires after lunch.
The dealership will be open on Saturday with while-you-wait service, a showroom full of great new and used bikes, the best selection of great riding gear, useful accessories for all models, and casual wear in the region. And yes, stuff will be on sale including our legendary online temptations.
We continue to follow all safety protocols and our facility is protected by a UVGI air purification system, so you can count on a safe shopping experience at Bob’s. To ensure everyone gets the best possible customer care, we still encourage making an appointment in advance to talk seriously about motorcycle purchases (selling and trades too) and head-to-toe professional riding gear fittings.
*If you choose to join us for lunch, please let the Cured staff know in advance by calling them up at (667) 786-7111 and letting them know if you’re 1 person or more and that you’re part of the Bob’s BMW family. This way, as our ungroup grows, they can sit us adjacently enhancing our collective fun. Please wear a face covering in all areas of the restaurant unless eating/drinking. And, anticipating that you’ll enjoy the food and service, please be generous with your gratuity; these past few months have been very hard for restaurants and their staff.
All of us at Bob’s BMW wish you and yours a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

As the figurehead of the BMW brand, the boxer engine has made leaps and bounds in terms of innovation and refinement. From the humble beginnings of the R32 to the R1250GS, each iteration has gained performance, technological improvement, and the smoothness that the flat twin is known for. There has always been a market for the nostalgia of the original airhead, with its visceral and organic feel, but without the headache of tuning and maintaining carburetors. The R18 has perfectly filled that gap in the Motorrad lineup, straddling the line between modernity and heritage.
From the moment you lay eyes on it the R18 may look completely foreign to a motorcycle bearing the blue and white roundel, but it actually harkens back to the Pre-War R5. The First Edition R18 is absolutely jaw dropping, with beaming chrome and a jet black tank adorned with white pin-striping. Throwing a leg over it is also a pleasant surprise for the vertically challenged as it’s 27 inch seat height is the lowest in the BMW lineup. Behind the bars is a view of the massive cylinder heads, which surprisingly are push rod actuated.
The bike, as a whole, does a wonderful job of integrating old technology with modern innovation. It has an exposed drive shaft yet it is fuel injected and utilizes a single plate dry clutch but has ABS and traction control. The bike has a single gauge speedometer showing a digital tachometer in an LCD read out and I didn’t find myself longing for anything beyond it. The sparse layout in front of the handlebars gives you a much more stripped down riding experience with nothing to focus on but the road ahead.
Firing the bike up is an extraordinary departure from the traditional fuel injected boxer engine. With a flick of the starter the engine rumbles to life as the massive pistons make their nearly four inch stroke. The entire bike comes alive with an eager vibration, as if the bike is raring to leap forward. Gone is the agricultural clunk from the gearboxes of old when the R18 gets rolling, as it smoothly slips into gear. The bike pulls away effortlessly as the single plate dry clutch gives instant bite and responsiveness. Riding the R18 feels like dancing the waltz with a pugilist. Rolling along the engine is hardly breaking a sweat, even when its purring along at 70mph at 2500rpm. But as soon as you crack the throttle Dr. Jekyll becomes Mr. Hyde, as a brutish 118 ft lbs of torque rockets you forward with earth shaking intensity. The bike is an absolute riot off the line, like being propelled out of a slingshot. Although the power is immense, it isn’t obnoxiously loud. The bike is smooth when it wants to be but with an instantaneous snap of the throttle, you’ll be burning rubber. The fishtail exhaust contains the catalytic converter that tames the 1800cc into a muted roar, but rest assured the OEM option Vance & Hines slip on’s will unleash a raucous if you feel so inclined. When it comes time to bring the R18 to a stop, the brakes work with great efficacy and don’t jar you with a sharp engagement zone.
Riding the bike on the highway was one of the greatest surprises. Given the absence of any fairing I was expecting to be rattled with wind buffering. The ergonomics and geometry of the frame keep you low and out of the wind, but maintains that blissful sense of openness that only a naked bike can bring. With its long wheel base the R18 is also rock solid at speed, even with the turbulence of a passing semi truck. Getting off the freeway and into the city brought even more surprises. At 761 lb wet, one might think muscling the bike through Washington DC might be a challenge, but believe me when I say this bike is exceptionally light on its feet!
While rolling through the chicanes of Rock Creek Park, it became quite clear that this bike handles far below its weight class. This is thanks to the low center of gravity the flat twin is known for, as well as exceptionally taught and compliant suspension. Not once did I feel the bike buck or wallow through the turns, just point it where you want to go and the R18 feels like its on rails.
When the curves end and the traffic snarl begins the other benefit of the boxer becomes very apparent. Even with its 1.8 liters of displacement and no radiator in sight, not once did I feel the engine roasting me. Those enormous cylinders dissipate the heat with ease, aided by an oil cooler behind the front wheel. Even the frequent urban rider will have an absolute blast on this bike and it will absolutely turn heads at every corner.
One of the first questions I heard when the R18 was first announced was, “who is this bike for?” I think this bike is for everyone! A GS rider can appreciate coming off their tall perch and enjoy its low slung stance. As a 6’3 rider of an F850GS, I was incredibly comfortable with the ergonomics and never felt cramped. A rider coming off a bike like the silky smooth K1600 will crack a smile when they feel the unabashed pull of a big twin. Even a rider of an S1000R will love that exhilarating rush that only a big bore engine with stump pulling torque can provide. And if you still don’t believe me, come take a test ride to see for yourself!

On this day, Bob’s BMW would like to pause to thank all those who so bravely serve our country. We want to extend a special thanks and take a moment to recognize the accomplishments of a fellow rider, enthusiast, long-time customer of Bob’s BMW, friend, and honorable member of the military, Colonel Glen Michael Fitzpatrick, Ph.D.
Army Col. Audra L. Taylor, division chief, Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) states, “His career is truly great in scope and accomplishment. Fitzpatrick was there when the country needed him most during both war and peacetime. He ensured the military had access to the blood products it needed, carried out groundbreaking research, and worked with the international blood banking community to create synergy which benefitted the warfighter. ASBP owes him profound gratitude.”
After four decades of service and major contributions to his country including serving in key capacities in Operations Desert Shield and Storm, the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, and the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, Colonel Fitzpatrick was awarded the ASBP Lifetime Achievement Award this year.
Highlights of Colonel Fitzpatrick’s Career Include:
- Commissioned on graduation from the ROTC program at Colorado State University
- Earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University
- Began his Army career in 1975 as a medical field specialist with the 629thMedical Clearing Company
- Served as blood bank Chief at Madigan Army Medical Center from 1983-1985, and then laboratory manager at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1985-1988
- Provided oversight in the planning and distribution of blood support for Operations Desert Shield and Storm while serving as Joint Blood Program Officer for the US European Command from 1988-1991
- Provided blood support for emergencies like the 1998 air show disaster at Ramstein Air Base as well as for NASA Space Shuttles and special forces operations
- Directed research and development for advanced blood products at the Armed Services Blood Program Office from 1996-1999
- Served as the director of ASBPO from 1999-2003 where he was responsible for coordinating and maintaining an adequate blood supply for the Department of Defense
- Retired from active duty in 2003 but continued a military blood connection on the civilian collection agency side as Chief Policy Officer and Chief Operating Officer for America’s Blood Centers
- Currently president and director of clinical research and development for biotechnology company, Cellphire, Inc.
- Continues to serve as a mentor and research advisor for ASBP Specialist in Blood Banking Fellowship
Under each of these roles, Colonel Fitzpatrick accomplished a long list of achievements ranging from developing the plan for modernizing the frozen blood program, coordinating with other agencies for funding and development of hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers, fibrin bandage, cryopreserved platelets, and lyophilized platelets; to developing and implementing all DoD policies regarding blood collection, distribution, storage, and transfusion; and completing tasks like testifying before congress and the FDA, obtaining federal permission to fly blood products across the nations when all civilian aircraft was grounded after 9/11, and much, much more.
Today, in between his current professional roles, Colonel Fitzpatrick rides! His motorcycle collection includes a 1985 BMW K100, R67/2 sidecar rig, R1200C, and most recently the all-new R18!
Bob’s BMW is honored to know and call Colonel Fitzpatrick a member of the Bob’s BMW family. It is our pleasure to serve him and the thousands of other veteran riders. Here’s to Veterans Day 2020!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7/30/2020
How a local Howard County business is using existing technology to fight the battle against Coronavirus.
Ultra-violet light has been successfully killing airborne pathogens for more than a century, which is why Bob Henig, owner of Bob’s BMW Motorcycles, opted to install UVGI lights throughout the dealership’s HVAC systems to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.
Jessup, MD: Bob’s BMW Motorcycles remains committed to providing the healthiest, safest, and most comfortable work environment while doing its best to provide customers with an enjoyable and complete shopping experience.
Like countless other small businesses in today’s world, Bob’s BMW Motorcycles has explored ways to help its employees and patrons feel safe and comfortable in these unusual times. In addition to closely following every guideline and recommendation outlined in the Maryland Roadmap to Recovery, Bob’s BMW has successfully identified and implemented additional methods to create a clean and safe shopping experience. Bob’s BMW is proud to announce its most recent layer of protection against COVID-19 and other airborne viruses and germs: the installation of a state-of-the-art Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) system.
According to owner Bob Henig, “Bob’s BMW had a unique advantage. Many business operations don’t have standalone facilities and/or they share HVAC systems, while other businesses rent their spaces and have little if any control over facility changes or investment decisions. As a small business owner that owns my facility, I didn’t think twice about installing a UVGI system into the dealership. In fact it was something we were considering even before Coronavirus hit.”
The UGVI system is similar to those used in hospitals and surgery centers for air purification. It kills 99% of all germs and viruses as air passes through the HVAC system. The technology uses UV-C light, which is particularly effective at killing airborne pathogens. Not only does this technology help eliminate viruses and germs in the air we breathe, but also on most surfaces within the air-treated environment such as clothing, carpeting, and hard surfaces like desks, merchandise, and in Bob’s BMW’s specific case, motorcycles.
“The likely barrier to other businesses following suit will be cost, but the proven effectiveness of UGVI is worth the investment,” shares Bob Henig.
Hanna Creekmore, Marketing and Communications Manager of Bob’s BMW Motorcycles, adds “The best part about the UVGI system is that it works in the background to provide the extra layer of protection to the safety measures we currently have in place. It’s reassuring that our staff and customers are as safe as they can possibly be while working in and visiting the dealership, and it helps restore a sense of normalcy.”

March 24th,
To Our Customers and Friends:
First, I hope everyone reading this is healthy and that many of you have found time for a motorcycle ride or several over the past few weeks. We’re fortunate as riders to have one of the best tools for managing stress on the planet—plus you get to practice perfect social distancing while doing so, protective gear and all!
These are challenging times for everyone. This virus and its impact on our lives, families, friends, communities, careers, and businesses will test us all in some manner. But together as a community of motorcycle riders and good humans we can ride out this storm.
While we do not get to make all the decisions regarding what we can and cannot do right now since many are handed to us by state and local officials, rest assured that all of us at Bob’s BMW will do everything we can to be here for you and your motorcycle. We are fortunate to be designated an essential business so we can continue to serve your motorcycling needs.
Please note the following important changes to our operations:
Visiting Bob’s
In order to comply with current guidelines, all visits must be by appointment only. Please call 301-497-8949 to schedule service work on your bike (ext. 502), to select and purchase a new or used motorcycle (ext. 504) or riding gear, parts, and accessories (ext. 506).
All of us at Bob’s will do our best to make you feel as welcome as always. A hearty thank you and big smile will have to replace the handshakes and hugs for the immediate future as we remain diligent in practicing social distancing and ask that you do the same.
You can feel safe when visiting. We clean and sanitize our facility several times a day and have done so for several weeks. Between customer appointments we sanitize ourselves, the doors, restrooms, common surfaces like the coffee counter, and even motorcycle grips and gas tanks.
Our hours have changed slightly. We still open at 9 am but will close at 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
Online Orders
Keep the orders coming (thank you for your patronage)! Our 24/7 e-commerce operation continues to process orders just as quickly as ever. We are still here for you and shipping out packages!
I’d like to share a new slogan I believe all motorcyclists can use thanks to our friends at the Motorcycle Industry Council: We will “RIDE IT OUT” together. Consider including #RIDEITOUT when posting anything motorcycling related. I’m confident that both motorcyclists and our neighbors who may not ride bikes will instantly get the overall intent.
Finally, I personally and publically want to extend a BIG THANK YOU to our dedicated staff who have continued to serve the large and seemingly growing number of new and existing customers who have been calling, scheduling, and purchasing new and used motorcycles, and lots of other stuff from Bob’s these past few weeks. Thank you for your big smiles, commitment, and dedication. You give all of us great hope, strength, and confidence that we all will really RIDE IT OUT together.
Thank you for your continued support,

DEALERSHIP SPOTLIGHT, BY MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY COUNCIL (MIC)
The service center and police bikes inside Bob’s BMW in Jessup, Maryland.
Bob’s BMW in Jessup, Maryland, provides an essential service to law enforcement as well as to local farmers. RideReport recently spoke with owner Bob Henig over the phone.
Q: Bob, do you work with many law enforcement vehicles?
A: We have 30 to 35 police bikes that we are responsible for servicing. Currently, the Maryland State Police and about seven Maryland counties, plus the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, rely on Bob’s BMW for all their needs. Last week, we were notified that we were awarded a statewide, three- to five-year bid to provide police motorcycles to any department or jurisdiction in Maryland that wants to purchase these motorcycles, thus shortening these departments’ time frames measurably.
Q: That’s quite a fleet. But how often do they really need service?
A: Just this past Thursday, we had three police officers in here getting their motorcycles worked on. These police officers are out there using their motorcycles and, on an ongoing basis, there hasn’t been a week where one, if not more, police motorcycles have come in here because of scheduled service. Or they might get a nail in a tire and need a replacement immediately. These past three weeks, there has hardly been a day when there hasn’t been an officer at our shop needing our assistance.
Q: We’ve heard from some powersports retailers who only sell parts and accessories that they have been asked to remain open by law enforcement, too. Why is that?
A: All powersports dealers – new and used bikes or just the parts, accessory and riding gear operations – typically sell heated gear, gloves, technical underlayers, and a variety of things law enforcement use daily. Having multiple retailers open can be necessary because officers need to be able to go and get replacement riding gear or parts when and where it’s convenient to them. They may get a flat tire, or they need a new face shield when they are out working and not near their usual shop.
Q: Has social distancing made any difference?
A: Instead of having officers work side by side in a car, with motorcycles, they can have their social distancing. Perhaps it’s possible that during this health crisis, motorcycle use in the U.S. might start expanding. When there’s an incident, arrival times can be quicker for police officers or EMS on motorcycles, especially when traffic is an issue.
Also, one of our customers – he’s not a motor officer, he’s a helicopter pilot for a regional police department – he was in here the other day picking up a battery for his personal bike, and he was in full uniform. It’s because he often rides his motorcycle to and from work. He uses it for commuting, as do thousands of our customers, because motorcycles are efficient and can save on fuel. The average BMW gets over 40 mpg.
Q: How else have you seen motorcycles used for work?
A: We have about a dozen customers who are in farming, or who keep livestock, or who have to tend to orchards, and they use motorcycles and ATVs to do their jobs. I’ve had several customers use a modified GS (model motorcycle) to inspect their fields, or miles of fences, or to go check on their animals. And they need service and parts for their vehicles.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
A: There’s a whole social world on a motorcycle that doesn’t exist in a car. When motor officers patrol hiking and bike paths or neighborhoods, or manage large events, they can be more easily seen as a friendly and supportive part of their community.
The team here at Bob’s is proud to be able to serve our law enforcement officers and the greater community. We’re not only a community connected through motorcycling, we’re a community helping one another.
And, if we follow the rules from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), listen to our highly experienced health professionals and to all our hard-working elected officials trying to save as many lives as possible, I believe we can all ride it out together. We must work as one gigantic community.

About The Concept R18
The BMW Concept R18 is a new prototype flat-twin engine – the highest capacity boxer motorcycle ever produced. Simply named ‘Concept R 18’, this pure, stripped-down, raked-out bike gives more than a hint of what’s coming – in the cruiser segment. Clearly an exciting bridge between the aforementioned ‘hommage’ bike and the forthcoming series production motorcycle, the Concept R 18 has presence, attitude and promise in equal measures. The focus is the huge boxer engine – physically much larger in size than the 500cc version used in the hommage showbike, and designed to make a real statement. The spoked wheels have been chosen (21” front and 19” rear) to match the considerable proportions and the overall stance of this latest showbike which exudes attitude and presence. The modified front end and fishtail exhaust contribute to its custom, hand-made feel.
Low and long, raked out and understated, the Concept R 18 is a thing of beauty, with its polished aluminum cylinder covers, subtle color treatment to the motor, teardrop tank and fork, and areas of pin-striping with golden yellow tint in the deep, layered paint treatment. There are only three metal surface treatments used – either blasted, painted or polished – to give a clean, authentic atmosphere for the bike, while the iconic Metzeler-branded RILLE tires have a custom-made tread pattern and special color treatment on the sidewalls.
Anyone familiar with BMW bikes from the ‘50s will recognize the Pagusa-style seat, with embossed logo and hammered area on the leather. Open shaft-drive, cantilever rear suspension, a twin-Solex carburetor from a BMW 2002 car, a 1950s Bosch-inspired LED headlight mounted between the fork legs, no visible switchgear – the list goes on. And a walk around the Concept R 18 (as the motor’s plaquette proudly states) includes many surprises. For sure, it’s the continuation of a story that started with the R 5 Hommage.

Message from March 12, 2020
To Our Customers and Friends:
At Bob’s BMW, our first priority is always the health and safety of our customers, staff, and community. With that in mind, I want to personally share an update on what we are doing in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
We have been closely monitoring the evolving situation and carefully listening to what health experts at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) are sharing.
Grand Re-Opening
Due to the growing health concerns and caution about large gatherings, we will be postponing our Grand Re-Opening originally scheduled for March 21. The dealership will remain open on March 21, and we still invite you to come by any time during our usual operating hours to see the showroom upgrades we completed over the winter.
Visiting Bob’s
Our goal is for you to continue feeling confident and welcome when visiting Bob’s. We are exercising an abundance of caution in the attempt to keep customers and staff safe and healthy and have enhanced all our existing internal cleaning procedures:
- We are cleaning all public areas and offices even more frequently and thoroughly, with extra steps taken to sanitize public areas.
- We are using disposable disinfectant wipes throughout the day on all contact surfaces, including grips on motorcycles, to add that extra measure of cleanliness and protection.
- We have asked employees to stay home if feeling sick.
- We will be doing the basics like washing our hands far more often and encourage you to do the same.
- We are offering everyone a little more personal space (aka social distancing).
- Our entire facility is equipped with industry leading air HVAC, exchanging, filtering, tempering, and conditioning the air inside many more times per hour than standard systems.
Should changes to our current procedures or business operations occur, we will do our best to take the required actions and communicate information to our staff and customers in a timely manner.
Part of our mission at Bob’s is to be a safe, fun, and professional haven for all motorcyclists and that has not changed. Just as we encourage you to enhance your riding skills through training and ride with all the gear all the time (ATGATT) to stay safe on 2 wheels, we will do our best to personally and professionally mitigate the risks involved surrounding COVID-19.
If for any reason, you have concerns about visiting Bob’s in person, our General Manager Joe Southard or Owner Bob will be happy to speak with you. Please keep in mind getting parts, accessories, and apparel delivered right to your doorstep is always an option—just visit our website, call, or email us to place your order.
Thank you for your continued support and business.

When it comes to perfecting the big bore adventure bike, BMW has never been one to rest on its laurels for too long. Ever since Gelande Strasse graced the headlines of the industry, each new iteration of the GS has brought new levels of refinement and performance.
When the F series first debuted, it was meant to tip the scales more in the favor of dirt than street. It was a compliment to the boxer GS, which was incredibly competent off-asphalt but had a bias towards the street. The F700GS actually was my introduction to BMW bikes, and spent a fair amount of time evaluating the 800GS before owning a 2009 1200GS for about a year. It was this arc of ownership that led me to land on the new F850.
The main differences between the F and the R series are as follows. The R is renowned for it’s stump pulling low end torque with top end highway manners sitting at low revs. It also has the low maintenance drive shaft and anti-dive Telelever front end, while the F800 has inverted telescopic forks and a chain drive. I loved the eager revving nature of the 800, but it lacked the low end grunt of the boxer to muscle through low speed technical terrain. However the chain drive configuration is much more beneficial for off-roading, given the flexibility to alter the gearing with different sprockets. In the dirt, the 800 was much more apt to climb over rugged terrain with its taller ground clearance and 21 inch front wheel, and the slender profile was easier to maneuver in tight narrow trails. The suspension of the 1200 was a dream on the back roads, yet the front end of the 800 had a bit too much give for my aggressive riding style. The under-seat gas tank of the 800 made for exceptional low speed handling on the street, but the bike did have a tendency to get a bit light in the front end with long range high-speed cruising. It was clear that BMW had listened to the market feedback when they designed the 850, and created what I found to be the perfect balance between the F and R series over the course of a 7,900 mile trip through the Canadian Maritimes.
The route I had planned for the F850 covered a wide swath of terrain, from the Fjords of Sagueny and the coastal mountain curves of the Cote-Nord Region, to the rugged Alpine-esque off road terrain of Newfoundland. I set off on the month long trip loaded to the gills with as much luggage I could fit, and saw the first differences almost instantly. Although the decision to move the gas tank to the “traditional” location was met with confusion, it vastly helped with weight distribution. With a front/rear wheel load distribution of 49/51, the front wheel felt incredibly planted and confidence inspiring while navigating the chaos of the I-95 corridor. Furthermore, the introduction of a Steering damper helped the 850 track like an arrow. Cruising along at 70mph only called for the revs to hover above the 4,000rpm mark, which put it closely in line with the cruising pedigree of my old 1200. Better yet, at one point the TFT dash read a shocking 56 MPG consumption rate! Getting off the highway and onto the back roads towards the Adirondacks High Peaks revealed the prowess of the revised suspension. The front end is truly progressive in its feedback, and responds wonderfully to rider inputs. The initial bite of the brakes gave me enough compression to trail brake into a corner, and as the stroke compressed it sailed over imperfect asphalt with ease. Not once did I feel it bottom out, even with the worst potholes the road had to offer. Despite the heavy load of camping gear, a month’s worth of clothing, and camera gear, the bike still eagerly attacked even the most technical curves with composure. While on paper the bike did gain weight, I never noticed it comparatively to the old model.

Route 138 and 132 running along the St Lawrence Seaway are a must visit for motorcyclists, and gave me the perfect opportunity to stretch the new engine’s legs. The route goes for miles as it crests and falls along the mountains right on the shore. Steep grades and S curves required quick adjustments of rider input, and the 850 came through in droves. The mid-range spread of torque is much more immediate and linear than its predecessor. Give the throttle a quick twist and it leaps forward to attack the road ahead, and encourages you to find the ceiling of its rev limit. Peak power comes in at 6,200 rpm, so this is a bike that wants to be ridden on the boil, but is perfectly content and tractable in the low end. The Quick Shifter in conjunction with the slipper clutch made for a stellar combo coming into sharp downhill turns. You’ll be coming along at a good clip and within a quick flick of the foot you’re engine braking down two gears and picking your line without locking up the rear. When it’s time to hit the apex, the howl of the engine as you pin the throttle and quick shift up is an intoxicating thrill. This new engine sounds absolutely spectacular with the new 270 degree firing order. Upon start up it settles into a low V-Twin esque rumble, and has an aggressive sound that refrains from being obnoxiously loud as the revs climb. The new addition of the dynamic ride modes . The Dynamic mode isn’t just a moniker for sportier throttle response, it’s truly responsive to your level of input. Come on the throttle softly and the bike will roll along smoothly, but give the throttle a quick snap and you may send the front wheel airborne! The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Island also gave me an opportunity to unexpectedly put Enduro Pro to the test! On the route down from the highlands (about 1500 feet up) was some very inconsiderate road construction. The asphalt had been torn up entirely, and in its place was dirt turned to mud by a still-falling rain. The 12% downhill grade was more like a mudslide than a road, but Enduro Pro helped carefully modulate the throttle inputs and kept the rear end from stepping out severely. The ABS performed flawlessly as well, and kept the front end from washing as I tried to keep the descent in check amidst a flow of traffic.
The multitude of trails branching off from the Cabot provided some equally challenging (yet far more enjoyable) off-road excursions. One particular trail was a span of double track with ruts, sand, and large rocks sporadically mixed in between. But up on the pegs the 850 chugged up and over the obstacles without even breaking a sweat! The tractable low end power made light work of rough terrain and the suspension never bottomed or pogo-ed. On an open stretch of gravel Enduro Pro turns the bike into an absolute riot of a bike! With street biased tires, the traction control will let you whack the throttle and pitch the wheel out to drift the bike around, but will stop short of an enthusiasm-induced high side. Better yet, the ABS is calibrated to allow aggressive front braking on loose surfaces without taking a dirt nap. The bike can tear down a fire road at breakneck speeds without even batting an eye at the terrain below. Dynamic ESA on the rear shock does an exceptional job of keeping the rear end composed under rapidly changing terrain. It softened the blow of an unexpected bump without a jarring hit coming through the pegs or wallowing out from being overly soft. Among all the electronics on the new model, the TFT dash brings some fantastic functionality to the table. First and foremost, the screen is exceptionally easy to read in the brightest of sunlight. It also gives immediate access to critical bike information such as tire pressure, fuel mileage, engine temperature, and voltage. The smartphone / Bluetooth integration is a wonderful addition as well. When paired up, you can be streaming music from your phone to your helmet, and having control over playing and skipping songs all from the wonderwheel! Being able to have this functionality without taking a hand off the bars is more convenient and safer than having to operate the buttons on a helmet comm.
In the month I had on the road, there was not one single issue with the bike, and it performed absolutely flawlessly. It tirelessly consumed road miles, conquered technical terrain with ease, and was a downright blast to ride! I spent almost an hour on the Fleur De Lis Trail in Cape Breton finding the edge of the tire’s contact patch and the 850 was always ready for more. The F series is now ready to go toe to toe with it’s big brother boxer, and performs better than it’s predecessor in every way imaginable.

With the new Dynamic Roadster F 900 R and the F 900 XR in the Adventure Sport segment, BMW Motorrad is further expanding its product range for the popular mid-range. Both models offer sporty riding fun, straightforward handling and a unique range of equipment options, packaged to offer attractive value for money. Based on a powerful shared backbone, the two models differ significantly in terms of character and positioning.
The new BMW F 900 R – the Dynamic Roadster for purist riding fun.
Self-confident, sporty, active, focused on a dynamic experience – this is how fans of the BMW F 900 R could be described. The new dynamic roadster by BMW Motorrad conveys a sense of freedom and a modern lifestyle.
At the emotional level, sports-style and aggressive design meets inspiring performance in terms of engine output, torque and sound.
In addition, there are aspects such as a wide range of potential uses, a high level of suitability for everyday riding and ergonomics that make the F 900 R of equal interest to experienced sports riders and newcomers.
The new BMW F 900 XR – a genuine “XR” for the mid-range.
“XR” stands for an uncompromising mix of sportiness and touring capability. Having established this family with the BMW S 1000 XR, BMW Motorrad is now expanding it with the addition of a mid-range model. The design style and vehicle concept clear refer to the kinship with the “big sister”.
The F 900 XR also demonstrates easy mastery of the Adventure Sport segment’s key qualities: sporty riding dynamics combined with upright, GS‑like ergonomics, outstanding long-distance and passenger suitability and a design that conveys a powerful sense of character.
The new F 900 XR also benefits from the technology transfer from the upper class: Adaptive Cornering Light, Keyless Ride or Intelligent Emergency Call are all unique features in the mid-range.
In addition to sporty riders, the XR is also aimed at newcomers and motorcycle returnees due to its easy accessibility, low minimum seat height, A2 capability and attractive entry price.
Technology benchmark in the segment.
The two new models F 900 R and F 900 XR currently set the technological benchmark in the mid-range segment with their high-quality standard equipment (Connectivity, LED all round as standard) and their wide range of optional extras – in some cases unique in this class (including Adaptive Cornering Light, Keyless Ride, Dynamic ESA, Riding Modes Pro, Shift Assistant Pro, Intelligent Emergency Call, ABS Pro, MSR, DTC, DBC, RDC).
Drive featuring further developed 2-cylinder in-line engine with increased capacity and power along with new engine drag torque control.
In the new F 900 R and F 900 XR, enhanced riding dynamics are ensured by the further development of the 2-cylinder in-line engine first introduced in 2018 in the F 850 GS, now with 77 kW (105 hp) and an even fuller torque curve. The main factor here is an increase in capacity to 895 cc (previously 853 cc). With an ignition distance of 270/450 degrees and a new underfloor silencer system, the engine offers a particularly emotional sound.
In addition to the standard anti-hopping clutch, the new F 900 R and F 900 XR can be fitted with engine drag torque control (MSR) for the first time. It prevents the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abrupt throttling or downshifting, thereby ensuring even greater safety.
Two standard riding modes, ASC and ABS.
Riding modes Pro with DTC, ABS Pro, DBC and MSR as ex works options.
The new F 900 R and F 900 XR already offer the “Rain” and “Road” riding modes as standard. The standard trim also includes ABS and ASC Automatic Stability Control, which is disengageable.
With “Riding Modes Pro” as an ex works option, the sporty characteristics of the new F 900 R and F 900 XR can be experienced even more intensively. The additional riding modes “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro”, Dynamic Traction Control DTC and banking capable ABS Pro are available, along with Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and the new engine drag torque control (MSR).
Chassis with steel bridge frame, lightweight plastic tanks and the electronic suspension Dynamic ESA as optional extras.
Like the GS models in the F Series, the new F 900 R and F 900 XR make use of a steel bridge frame that integrates the engine as a load-bearing element and a fuel tank that is now back in its classic position in front of the rider. Front wheel control is taken care of by an upside-down telescopic fork, while the rear wheel is guided by a double-sided swinging arm with central suspension strut.
The light, plastic-welded fuel tanks with a capacity of 15.5 litres (F 900 XR) and 13 litres (F 900 R) are a world first in motorcycle construction. The bolt-on steel rear frame has also been newly developed for the F 900 R and F 900 XR in order to create a visually short and slim rear. While the new F 900 R is a dynamic roadster focusing on sporty use and therefore shorter spring travel, the new F 900 XR – with its somewhat longer spring travel – offers a noticeable increase in comfort and therefore an even wider range of potential uses.
With the BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), available as an optional extra and almost unique in these vehicle segments, it is possible to further enhance the dynamic riding experience, riding comfort and also touring and passenger suitability, since the damping of the rear spring strut is automatically adapted to the conditions depending on riding state and manoeuvres.
Adaptive Cornering Light unique in the mid-range segment as part of the optional extra Headlight Pro. Powerful LED lighting units all round as standard.
Even greater safety is offered by the Adaptive Cornering Light as a component of Headlight Pro, which is unique in the mid-range and comes as an optional extra ex works. Here, the rider benefits from improved illumination of the road when cornering for even safer riding at night. All lighting units in the new F models are based on LED technology as standard.
Perfectly readable colour 6.5-inch TFT screen with BMW Motorrad Connectivity as standard.
The BMW Motorrad developers attached great importance to optimum readability for the instrument cluster – even in difficult lighting conditions. In addition, information diversity, display quality and user-friendliness are unmatched. The graphics on the screen are visually adapted to the sporty on-road world. Additional Core screens are available in conjunction with the optional Pro riding modes. The standard BMW Motorrad Connectivity is a unique feature in the mid-range, offering the ability to conveniently talk on the phone, listen to music or navigate while riding.
Perfectly designed ergonomic triangles for dynamic riding fun and – in the case of the F 900 XR – excellent segment-specific wind and weather protection for touring and travelling.
As a dynamic roadster, the F 900 R offers a particularly sporty, active seating position.
Meanwhile the F 900 XR offers an impressively active yet relaxed riding position for touring and travelling. The front fairing including an adjustable windshield combines a sporty look with sound rider protection.
Various low and high seats along with the optional lowering feature also allow individual adjustment to various body heights.
Three powerful colour and style variants each for an unmistakable sense of character.
Three dynamic colour and style variants for the new F 900 R and F 900 XR ensure unmistakable characteristics.
The new F 900 R is available in Blackstorm metallic, San Marino Blue metallic and Style Sport in Hockenheim Silver metallic/Racing Red.
In addition to Light White, the new F 900 XR offers the two Style variants Style Exclusive in Galvanic Gold metallic and Sport in Racing Red.
The highlights of the new BMW F 900 R and F 900 XR:
• The new BMW F 900 R: the dynamic roadster for purist riding fun.
• The new BMW F 900 XR: a genuine “XR” for the mid-range.
• The powerful common backbone integrates the further developed
2-cylinder in-line engine with an increased capacity of 895 cc
(previously 853 cc).
• Further enhanced output and torque: 77 kW (105 hp) at 8 750 rpm and 92 Nm at 6 500 rpm.
• More than 87 Nm torque in the relevant lower speed range from 4 500 to 8 500 rpm.
• 35 kW (48 hp) version available for licence class A2.
