Back in the day this was hands down Bob’s favorite model. He went off to the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for the International BMW intro which is a story itself. He came home with a very bright sparkle in his eyes and took one for himself immediately after we satisfied all our customer’s orders . The R1100RS is still an amazing machine and the very first that BMW ever built that had a factory adjustable seat height that worked for Bob at 5’5” as well as his taller friends and customers – even those who topped 6’2”.
We know that should we ever get the opportunity to take in an original one owner first year machine like this one is, but in the R1100RSL trim -- the one with the full lower fairing -- which is what Bob rode himself for several years, we know that he’ll keep that specimen for the museum collection. He already has one of the very rare Nikko Baker Bomber conversions that he rides occasionally. That too is another story.
When built new this R11RS came with the revolutionary Tele-lever front suspension and Para-lever rear suspension. It also had the newest generation of BMW’s legendary ABS. It sported full floating front disc brakes with dual piston calipers. The RS also came with factory saddlebag mounts which was another big step for BMW as when the bags were off the bike you could barely tell it had bag mounts. It also was supplied with heated grips, an adjustable windscreen, adjustable handlebars and a 3 level adjustable seat. There was also a built in information panel in the right side of the fairing that showed fuel level, engine temperature and what gear you were in. The beautiful, light weight BMW cast 3 spoke wheels highlighted the lines of this very beautiful machine.
We’ve done everything we felt was required to return this bike to its former glory with a medium refurbishing. As the front tire was barely used (497 miles) and still very fresh we simply installed a matching rear tire and added Nitrogen to both. We performed a complete Inspection II service with the Annual so that all fluids are fresh as well as the oil and air filters. We installed a new clutch cable. We replaced that scratched up valve cover, the bar end weight, the mirror and the cylinder protector with new BMW parts.
And when all this was done one of our certified technicians took it out for a solid test ride of about 20 miles to complete our PPI or Pre-Purchase Inspection and insure it passed the Maryland State Safety Inspection 100%, which it did so a fresh certificate is on file for this machine while it awaits a new and hopefully appreciative owner who can start really breaking it in.
