Install an S Fairing!
The
classic 'S' Fairing has always been one of the best looking pieces
of body work ever put on a motorcycle. Luckily, the fairing shell
is still available from BMW - in primer - and is now made of a
more crack-resistant material. The mounting parts assembly, known
as the "Trim
Kit", which was recently discontinued by BMW, is available
once again—from Bob's!
Everything you need to install the fairing
on most 1974 through '90 air-cooled twins* is included,
except a windshield. We didn't include a windshield in
the kit because there are so many different
types to choose from, but of course, we have a varied selection
from which to pick. All the fundamental parts in the kit are
genuine BMW parts, though some which were originally chrome
are now black. (Some of the chrome parts are still available
but have become exceedingly expensive. If you want chrome, call.)
The only non-BMW parts in the kit are the nuts/bolts/washers
and windshield fasteners. Our windshield fasteners are easy to
install and re-useable, which the originals were not.
The original BMW Trim Kit included a clock and voltmeter. Ours doesn't simply
because these instruments are quite expensive and many buyers requested that
they be left out of the kit in the first place. Our kit does include original
BMW cover plates to fill the holes in the dashboard where the instruments
would have gone. The clock and voltmeter, along with he required wiring harness,
are available separately should you want to install them.
*Does not fit R65 ('79-'84), R80GS, R80ST, or R100GS/PD. For 1985
and later "Monolever" models (other than the ones just mentioned)
you must order TWO of part # 31 42 2 300 471 which
is a shackle plate with a larger diameter hole to accomodate the bigger fork
cap nuts. If you're converting from an RS or RT model, still more parts are
required. Please call for details.

Other options
to optimize both the looks and ride of the S Fairing experience:
Handlebars
A low handlebar is the correct ergonomic match for the S Fairing. It puts your
body in the right posture to maximize the aerodynamic advantage and protection
offered by the fairing.

BMW Taller Mirrors
These were original equipment on R90S and R100S models. With stalks that are
2+ inches longer than standard mirrors, they generally improve rear view on
any model with a lower/shorter handlebar. (If your bike already has a low bar,
it may already have longer mirrors too.)

Napoleon Bar-End Mirrors
A functional and stylish alternative. Important feature: the leading
cause of S fairing damage is the common bike tip-over. When the
bike goes down, a
stock mirror will typically bend up, collide with the fairing
and crack it. Bar-end mirrors greatly reduce the chance of this type of
damage!
