1975 BMW R90/6

This is a very nice original cosmetic and mostly original mechanical example of one of BMW’s true classic machines from the 1970’s era. Along with the expected service and maintenance intervals and updates one would expect and desire of bike with just two (2) owner, well cared for machine this beauty is ready for a new home and some fresh adventure.

On a bike of this vintage anything less than 100,000 miles should be considered very low miles and at less than  half that and a maintenance log plus receipts for all service going back to around the 11,000 mile point there’s not too much we don’t know about its care over the years. Bob’s BMW has taken care of it since around 1991 and the company Bob’s acquired to become the entire service department, Bavarian Motorhaus which was owned by Ted Porter of current Ted’s Beemer Shop in California took care of it before that.

It appears that pretty much anything that was suggested over the years was addressed as maintenance and it never really sat idle although the low miles would attest to the fact that at some points it did not see lots of exercise since 46,000 miles averages out to be just over 1,000 miles per year for its 43 years of existence after leaving the factory in Berlin.

During the past several years and roughly 1,500 miles this bike has seen a professional relining of the tank via Bob’s without damaging the exterior original paint, a rebuilt front brake caliper, top end reseal and re-torque after 500 miles, a complete clutch replacement, new Metzeler tires and tubes, and a light tune-up. After we took the bike in with the goal of bringing all services and maintenance up to date and finding a new home we did the following:

Rebuild the Bing CV carbs along with replacing the air tubes and assorted hardware. New spark plugs, new spark plug wires, caps and boots plus points and condenser along with some fine tuning. New fuel lines and in-line filters. Several new bulbs and one turn signal. New Progressive fork springs, assorted fork internals and fluid. A full brake system check. Adjust clutch free-play. Replace one control lever and the clutch lock-out switch. Clean and lubricate both control switches. Replace the rider foot peg covers with the top quality reproductions Bob’s stocks plus a new shift rubber and one instrument housing trim rubber ring. Install a new battery and battery tender lead.  

After all that we ran it through the detailed MSI or Maryland Safety Inspection check list and took it out for an extended test ride to confirm that it starts, idles, shifts, accelerates, handles, corners, stops and delivers the high level of fun and enjoyment it was originally designed to do.  It easily fulfills that goal and it looks the part too.

And at some point in the past for which we don’t have the records on it appears the drilled front brake disc was replaced as it shows very little wear. The brake lines were also replaced with the upgraded and higher quality stainless steel braided ones. 

In addition to the original equipment this bike was built with it also offers a set of Krauser cylinder head protectors more commonly known as crash bars; these are very correct for the period. It also has a set of BMW/Krauser touring cases with the BMW logos attached and are mounted to a period correct BMW mounting  brackets which are better than the original Krauser design saddlebag mounts with the welded lower brace for extra stability. It has a very clean and solid set of MAC reproduction mufflers that look like stock but have a slightly larger opening and a little throatier exhaust note.

There is also the original style Magura screw-in type throttle lock which is hidden on the underside of the throttle mechanism. The rear shocks are a set of adjustable KONI’s and are in excellent condition and also a very correct upgrade for this period machine. We also went to the expense of installing a new original chrome headlight trim ring as the original had a very small scratch/scrape in it (you’ll find this on the Bob’s Used Parts site now).

Every part of this bike is in great mechanical or cosmetic condition. The instruments and seat are two examples of how well these bikes can hold up and be enjoyed. The original paint on everything from the frame to the painted parts now shines very nicely thanks in part to good care over the years and a near full day professional detailing here at Bob’s.

If one looks close there are some minor patina areas from its 43 years that can be seen, especially around the swing arm and driveshaft; all very common areas of paint deterioration. There are also a few very small scratches or stone chips in the paint on the front fender and a little peeling paint on the seat pan but this 1975 is clearly one of the finer examples to be found anywhere in the country.  The wheels still shine beautifully and appear to still be the original BMW chrome spokes and nipples in the aluminum rims and there are almost no marks from what must have been 5 tire changes over the years.

There is nothing we feel a new owner needs to do except take it home and start enjoying it. We honestly feel this bike is a solid 9.5 mechanically and probably a solid 8.0 to 8.5 cosmetically on our very critical 10 scale and remember the cosmetics are still all original. Stop by and inspect it for yourself.

It came to us with 2 keys for the bike plus one set for the saddlebags, the owner’s manual and a not fully complete tool kit (12 pieces) that sits in the factory correct tool tray under the seat adjacent to the correct silver colored tire pump which is in fair condition.
