2004 BMW R1100S

Now here’s an opportunity to own one of the bikes that is an all-around staff favorite at Bob’s. Several people in addition to Bob (who owns two he rides) have these sweet machines. They do it all from super sporty to sport touring with every day commuting and fun in the middle. They have great ergonomics, accept full sized saddlebags, are light weight and still look great a full decade down the road. This light project is mostly in need of addressing some cosmetic issues which are not that substantial and doing a full service and depending on where you live replacing the brake discs – more on that later so keep reading if you’d like a fun and basically good looking solid machine. Like all PROJECT BIKES specific conditions of sale apply so be sure to review those documents.

Let’s start with all things mechanical. We sent this bike through our tough PPI process as well as the Maryland State Inspection. It failed on only two issues – brake rotors being just under factory spec and with 66,000 plus miles that is not a surprise as they are wear items and will eventually use material up. In Virginia these would be fine as long as you keep good pads in play and the bike stops superbly. BMW sets a very high standard as does the state of Maryland in this regard. The numbers say replace them and if you do the work it costs less than if we did it but all around it is only a $950 job if we did it for you with pads and fresh hardware.

Due to old gas and a small throttle mechanism issue we did not test ride the bike initially. Since taken in we’ve repaired that under $100 issue and the bike went out for a good, quick 2 mile test ride. According to the Master Tech the bike “runs well, ABS works and (the) clutch (is) good”. As we don’t have records on this bike as it was originally purchased out of this area we believe it should have a full inspection II and biannual service to freshen up all fluids, etc. The center stand shows a very little bend from the same tip over incident that caused the main fairing bracket to be very slightly bent but even Bob could probably live with this; it is not a functional issue in any respect and does not need to be addressed to safely and enjoyably ride this bike.

We’ve also noted the assorted exposure issues on hardware in a variety of areas that can be easily noted in a thorough review of the attached images. None of this needs to be addressed either – it’s purely cosmetic as are a small assortment of minor nicks, dings, scratches and some fading on rubber bits that can also be addressed with some of today’s modern cleaners and refurbishing chemicals. There is a note in our review to clean some light surface rust at the very top of that small portion of the exposed fork tubes and to adjust the final drive pivot bearings which is a commonly made small adjustment; we could perform this before you take the bike for under $50 if preferred. And we are always glad to show you the full estimate we created for ourselves or use it as a pick ticket so you can buy the assorted hardware, rubber bits and plug covers across the counter at Bob’s with a discount and install it yourself over a long weekend.

You should know that a 10-15 feet a great deal of the cosmetic stuff is not even noticeable. And the bike will probably shine up quite nicely. We just feel it’s a better candidate to send out the door as is than for us to invest several thousand dollars in when someone else might like it just the way it is. This one came from BMW having been built in February of 2004 and retailed in June of the same year with these goodies: ABS, Comfort or tall handlebars, comfort (taller stock) screen, heated grips, center stand (it was an option) and the pillion seat cover.

It sports a carbon fiber front fender and 4 way flashers and beautiful 5 spoke cast alloy wheels and floating brake discs up front to stop that healthy 90 HP two cylinder opposed twin oil and air cooled motor connected to a 6 speed gearbox all in a very agile 500 (+-) pound machine. Like all R1100S models it has the tele-lever and para-level suspension, the Bosch engine management system with fuel injection. And this one has the added benefit of being offered up with the quick detachable BMW touring cases that thanks to a 2 into 2 exhaust system that exits under the rear seat cowling are both full capacity hard bags exactly like those attached to the R1100-R1150RT and RS models of the same era. For a sportier look you can order in a set of the city or authority case lids which when paint matched are really a great looking extra.

Perfect, fully serviced and yes, slightly lower mile examples of the R1100S from 1999 to 2004 regularly bring $6,000 to over $8,000. In 2013 Bob’s only found a pair to offer, we sold a black 1999 for $7,695 and a 2004 Boxer prep (less equipment included) for $8,295 so offering this PROJECT BIKE up for as cheap as we are is nothing short of a steal in our book and it has the owner’s manual and a total of 3 keys.
