OK, perhaps this particular shade of genuine BMW metallic gold is not your favorite color or maybe you hate gold completely but underneath this faded and partially repainted exterior lies a big heart of --- yep, real gold. Titled as a 1979 most of these machines were built by BMW in 1978 but we were told this bike started its life in Canada and that might explain that date issue. Regardless, very few were produced in this color and even fewer were of the 40mm head and exhaust variety of which this is one – that fact alone makes it a very desirable drive line.
We don’t however believe for a second that there are only 3,014 miles on this machine but the prior owner did not have any documentation to accurately identify what the total mileage might be; he acquired in back in 2005 when the odometer showed 1,050 miles. We could be wrong but that’s what we believe. It would be impossible without taking the engine apart to try and guess at mileage and that would be a shame because it feels and sounds pretty tight.
The RS fairing, seat cowling and front fender are all in pretty good shape but there are a few small stress cracks and the windscreen is a total write off. The lowers were factory cut for BMW cylinder guards but there were not with the bike when it arrived. The fairing center grille and steering head impact boot or dash pad are included and shown separately. A few of the mounting tabs do have damage on the main bike panels where it attaches. The exhaust system looks solid and again is the correct 40mm system as delivered by BMW. The center and side stands are OK and function well but the center stand is missing that handy little drop down tang.
The paint is what it is and we think the photos show all of that very well. Love is in the eye and heart of the person doing the hugging. We can sell the drivelines out of this bike all day long for very good money or we could set the motor and transmission aside for our next conversion project – even Bob was thinking about upgrading his 1961 R90/2 to a R100/2 to give it a little more boost and since he has an antique Steib Delivery Box sidecar attached it often hauls around some extra weight. But we feel this bike belongs back on the road as a complete R100RS. Are you up for that?
And finally the front wheel. It is technically a factory recall (#84V-092) wheel and should be replaced under that open campaign. We have a request in to BMW at this time to confirm that this has not already been performed on this VIN because only one wheel per qualifying VIN may be submitted. WE can tell you that the wheel looks perfect and in all the years Bob has been doing what he does he’s only seen one wheel that showed the issues that BMW created this recall for. If you were going to restore this bike to become a perfect original example again you’d want this exact wheel on the front. If not, and BMW confirms it can be covered the new owner will be given a fresh BMW 19’ cast mag wheel that looks almost identical to this one but an expert can spot the differences at about 20 feet.
<span style="\\\\\\\\"font-size:" 12px;\\\\\\\\"="">We are sure it won’t hang around very long as we are asking a very reasonable price for it and know that it is a real value based on just a handful of the parts involved.
