This Classic BMW started getting attention when it first arrived a few weeks ago. It came from an estate of a long time Bob’s customer and had been his for over a dozen years. As he was not a local customer Bob’s did not do most of the regular service on this machine but did provide assorted parts and guidance over the years. Cosmetically, we’ve chosen to leave most of it as it arrived since it’s a good looking, mostly original machine. Mechanically we’ve done all we thought necessary to make it safe, roadworthy, comfortable and fun as our mantra goes.
Mechanically we’ve changed all the fluids as you’d expect plus done a light tune-up and the Maryland State Inspection which noted a slight notch in the steering head bearings so these have been replaced. We have also installed new tires and tubes, a set of our own reproduction rear shocks and a set of reproduction (correct style) chromed mufflers. A few assorted rubber bits were also replaced along with a new and correct BMW tail light as it was cracked.
Cosmetically it is mostly original from one end to the other. However it is not without some blemishes but at five to ten feet it’s a great looking bike. Up close you will note some paint deterioration on the frame from a fairing that was mounted long ago as well as some battery acid splash back by the swing arm and drive shaft housing. Both the fenders appear to be in original paint and have some chips and scratches on them; the front has seen some cheap touch up but it’s only visible up close and it’s on the back side anyway. The seat is missing some of the original side trim and there is one small tear in the cover near the rear lower side that is visible up close but it’s still a very comfortable seat that looks the part since it’s original; the rear grab rail is in good shape. The seat pan appears to be solid and the hinges and lock work easily.
As we stated above the shocks and mufflers are brand new and the fuel tank was clearly repainted at some point and looks beautiful. This could be the beginning of a low level restoration or refurbishing the next owner takes on with help from the Bob’s team. This great ride also sports a very hard to find Reynolds Ride-Off center stand and a set of BMW saddlebags and mounts. There are a few typical cracks near the locks but these are easily addressed with some black silicone sealant and otherwise are in very good condition. Add a tank bag and you are set for touring in style!
The next owner can decide if they need the owner’s manual as Bob’s is also including a Clymer Service & Repair Manual so it is not really needed. There are two keys for the ignition and two keys for the bags but no fork or seat lock key as often happens. This classic Avus black with white pin stripes R75/5 is a great value at the offered price and we’ve not had one this nice in a very long time as few people are turning them loose. Don’t wait too long if this is what you desire parked in your garage!
