THIS IS THE REAL DEAL. These early Steib/BMW sidecars are RARE and HARD TO FIND, especially in condition this original and this good. One of the images offered for your consideration (remember the Twilight Zone?) shows BMW’s own reference book “Typen und Technik” (a 1976 edition in this case) with the 1956 – 1967 R60 shown with this exact sidecar except for the addition of the optional Steib top cast alloy running light. It is also illustrated in several other BMW publications and those written by or compiled by independent authors over the years.
It appears that the sidecar was attached to both machines at one time, with its most recent use being on the R60/s as the speedo had been changed along with the final drive unit to lower sidecar gearing. We have not even given it a bath as we thought it would be more fun to share and offer it up as the barn fresh find it truly is. Thus, you’ll see some dust, light dirt and even what appears to be mud dauber bees nest material on the original Steib lamp atop the fender. While there is some degradation of the paint most everywhere it is also in good enough condition to be washed, detailed and used exactly as it is in our professional and experienced opinion.
There is a little rust and most of that is visible on the rear of the fender where it pivots to change a wheel or tire and on the top of the body where the windscreen skirt likely held a little moisture over the years it saw service. There is also a little below the seat towards the rear storage compartment which is very common. There is a small dent below the rear storage compartment (on the underside) and a small section of floor where the metal was replaced; when we do not know, but we can assume it was probably 30 years or longer based on the history we do have. The owner had kept quite a journal of when he purchased items, what he paid, service he did and even trips he took.
All the mounting parts are included except the parts that would be attached directly to the motorcycle (2 eye bolts and an engine mount with ball) and we may be able to deliver an original set separately if desired. The locks for the trunk work. The wiring to plug the sidecar into the bike is still intact, although we don’t know if it’s still functions. The interior is still in serviceable condition although after 3 decades if not longer it’s not perfect especially the seats wooden base. The seat cover material does not appear to be original and was likely recovered long ago.
These three lamps are probably worth $1,000 by themselves to someone in need for a restoration project. This TR500 model also has the spare wheel and mounting rack that BMW specified be supplied when badged as a BMW as it was an option from Steib. Both wheels that are included are of the early half hub pre-1955 BMW style; one has a black rim and the other is chrome. The spokes are not great on either but all are serviceable. The tires are 30 plus years old and junk. The attaching/locking bolt with BMW roundel for the spare wheel is not exactly as delivered by Steib or BMW but works perfectly and looks the part; most people would not know or observe this when mounted.
We think this is the nicest, mostly original and very correct Steib TR500/BMW sidecar to be offered anywhere in two decades, don’t wait too long to make your initial inquiry about this offering as the last one we had sold before it hit the website.
