A few important words about Bob’s Project bikes:
Every year we get the opportunity to buy (or take in trade) a number of bikes
that need service
before we can resell them. This happens most often during our busiest time of
the year;
so we buy them, park them and put the work off until the winter when we usually
slow down
a little expecting to offer them up the following spring, fully serviced and ready
for a new owner.
2005 was our best and busiest year ever; our entire business grew by 20% and the
service
department was unusually swamped. We’ll be adding techs this year to insure
we can take
even better care of our customers. This backlog slowed our ability to turn some
of these
bikes into the kind of guaranteed machines we offer. So what has happened is that
our
extensive list of bikes destined to become Certified and Approved (C&A) Bob’s
Bikes has
barely begun to head into the process, let alone get completed. So again we’ve
selected to offer
them up to the public just as they sit. Most haven’t even been washed so
just like us you’ll need
to be able to see the shine under the dust or grime they’ve accumulated!
We have lots of customers all over the continent (one of last years projects went
to Canada)
and right here in our backyard in Maryland that love to work on their own bikes.
Many enjoy the
opportunity to earn a return on their sweat equity --- just like fixing up a home
while others
just like the challenge. Rest assured however that since we still sell more good
clean used
BMW motorcycle parts (Bob’s Used Parts is how we started back in 1981) than
anyone else
in the USA, if we did not believe that these bikes will make dependable and fun
rides for a new
owner we’d simply part them out!
Finally, our descriptions of these project bikes will be as accurate as possible
and gladly share
any info we have from prior owners or from our own inspection, just like we do
with the bikes
that become C&A Bob’s Bikes. We provide more photos on projects so you
have what’s needed
to make a well informed decision before visiting us, which we strongly encourage
since nothing
beats a hands-on inspection. If desired, we can provide in-depth consultations
at a nominal fee
before taking on your first project to help you better understand both the minor
risks and the
substantial benefits. We do however ask that you schedule an appointment with
Bob as he’s
usually the one that buys these bikes, writes the descriptions and knows the most
about them.
