Project Bikes

We know this page occasionally gets stale, but there's a reason. Bob's generally so busy that he simply works at acquiring future project bikes 8 months of the year and sets them aside. Then in early to mid fall Bob will spend several days re-inspecting, photographing, documenting and writing up a fresh batch for all you do-it-yourselfers to drool over. Well, that time is fast approaching and Bob says he'll be doing just that after he returns at the end of October from a Scouting Tour with Edelweiss Bike Travel in Japan. So stay tuned and be one of the first to inspect the next batch of 8-12 Project grade BMW's! To see project bikes that have sold the past year, click here.

If you're the type who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty, our Project Bikes are a great value. Put a little sweat equity into one of these pre-owned "diamonds in the rough" and you'll not only earn a nice return on your investment, you'll get a great ride too! 1991 BMW K1
Classic Black Metallic • 10,157 miles
stock number 365526
$5,795

A nice one owner bike that hasn't been ridden much and needs a good detailing and service. The K1 was produced by BMW from 1989 to 1993 resulting in only 6,918* units produced worldwide. In 1989 the new K1 featured ABS brakes and a 4 valve cylinder head and new fuel injection to extract all the potential power form the water-cooled inline 4. We just gave this bike a full detail, renewed the front master cylinder, installed a new 4-way hazard, new battery, and it passed Maryland State Inspection. Why is it a project bike? Well it hasn't been ridden much in it's ownership and needs a few thing. Firstly, the clear coat on the lower side panels and a few other areas has given up the ghost, many areas look great but from 10 feet it's hard to see the deteriorating clear coat. Also, it has a rear main seal weep and will likely need a re-seal. Right now the clutch does not slip and it's not actively leaking but it will need to be done at some point. In the process it also could use a bi-annual service and a fresh set of rubber which while they pass are old. It could also use a steering head bearing adjustment. It does feature a very nice and expensive Ohlins rear shock. This is a solid low mileage bike priced right that you can tag and ride today.

1985 K100RS with Pichler Fairing
Stock Number: 042079
Mileage: 249,146 showing on odometer (it may have a few more in total)
Color: Original Classic black metallic & black gelcoat on fairing,
Accessories & Options: Pichler fairing, bmw bag mounts & rack, saddlebags & 22 liter truck, trailer hitch, corbin seat & a rare Randolph gas tank which may or may not be sold with the bike, original tank available and on the way to us (no photos at this time, Telefix fork brace
Cosmetic Condition: poor is what an honest description would stat
Mechanical Condition: it does not run, has no battery & we’ve not tried to start it. The original engine was yanked and sold for parts and this is claimed to be of 1991 vintage with about 100,000 miles on it, the gearbox was also swapped out and has even fewer miles but we DO NOT have documentation to prove this true. There are a pair of Metzeler marathon tires with about 90% of their tread but they are not brand new or probably recent. The brakes all still seem to work and it rolls around and appears perfectly straight and we do not have any information that it was ever crashed. The brake discs all look like they have life left in them.
Notes: We do know this bike was at one time loved, well cared for, regularly serviced and showed up at most BMWMOA rallies between 1985 and 2001. It was often seen pulling a small camping trailer. It’s been of the road since 2003. We’re sure the bike could run again with some TLC, a full service, battery and lots of small bits or it would be an incredible special project or parts bike. The Randolph Tank may be worth more than the bike by itself and thus is offered separately.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS SALE OF THE MOTORCYCLE AND THE RANDOLPH TANK WILL BE HANDED OVER TO THE PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION

Offered at: Call and make us one on the full package or the bike without the Randolph Gas Tank. We think the bike with stock gas tank including the stuff inside in whatever condition it’s in should be worth about $1400. You may also make an offer on that tank as well although we already have a few people that are interested in it. It may or may not fit other year and model BMW’s and that research and confirmation is your responsibility!

1993 K75S
Stock Number: 154146
Mileage: 12,252 documented original miles
Color: Classic Black metallic w/Light Blue gas tank (original rusted through)
Accessories & Options: BMW saddlebag mounts, ABS, tool kit, corbin seat , BMW 3-spoke cash mag wheels
Cosmetic Condition: good to very good (shame about the non-matching tank) with a few minor scratches and nicks (see images) on fairing, seat cowl and right side of belly pan and crank cover. Seat has cracked in two places and that’s not unusual for a corbin of this age regardless of mileage or use. There is a repaired crack on the inner fairing panel below instruments that still needs to be painted. Rear muffler guard is missing most bolts.
Mechanical Condition: Not ridden since tank was swapped out but filters, etc. inside tank are fresh. Bike was serviced at Bob’s at 9400 miles and was running fine at that time. There was a fault in the system on the ABS that could have been generated by lack of use as it was sitting for about 1 year before it came to us. As the Control unit was also not working we threw in a used one, fired it up but did not test further. That working used unit is still in the bike. Tires and wheels were swapped with another used K75S to improve that machine as rubber was almost new. These tires need to be replaced.
Notes: This bike has some risks since we have not started or ridden it since then. The tank is dry at this time but have tried to report everything we know accurately. A fresh set of tires, new fluids and a tank of gas will hopefully produce a running bike with low original mileage; you’d have to decide it you can live with the mis-matched paint on the gas tank. We hope, but again don’t know for sure if all the other electrics are still fine including the ABS modulator.
Offered at: $2495

1990 K75S one owner bike
Stock Number: 015229
Color: Blue
Mileage: 121,061 (odometer shows 110,463)
Accessories & Options: bar backs, Parrabellum fairing/tall screen, BMW luggage rack, BMW saddlebag mounts, tool kit, full fork boots, BMW fuel and temperature gauges installed in fairing sides, progressive fork springs and a updated rear stock BMW shock. Three keys included.
Cosmetic Condition: good especially considering the age & miles, but there are some areas where paint is wearing thin and it’s possible that a long time ago a few panels may have been repainted. There’s no current indication the bike was crashed or dropped and all alloy, hardware, wheels, etc look very good. Wheels actually look perfect and most original black driveline parts look excellent as well, but the fork legs show their age as most do being exposed to all the road debris right up front.
Mechanical Condition: It starts and runs perfectly, shifts amazingly smooth and stops fine. We performed a load test on the clutch as it is original and it is not showing ANY SIGNS of slippage. All the switches work, the gauges indicate what they should and the horn is not stock and a bit weak but works. The rear disc looks like it is well below spec and the fronts are probably close to needing replacement but the wear is very even; with fresh pads they’d probably stop even better. Both tires are serviceable, but the rear is a little flat in the middle and the front has lots of tread. Only the right hand grip shows any real wear and most all other rubber items look quite fresh. This bike ran good enough and looked clean enough that we were going to do some work and sell it as a good used bike but alas we’ve really missed our window of opportunity on this one so it’s up for grabs. The entire exhaust system is exceptionally clean, tight and sounds great-no rattles.
Notes: Bob can personally tell you he’s known the owner and this bike since new although Bob’s did not sell it because it was purchased a year before Bob’s became a dealership in 1991. The owner treated it well and never raced it or rode it on the aggressive side. It’s either been serviced by Morton’s BMW or Bob’s in it’s entire history combined with assorted care, oil changes and efforts by a very caring adult owner who now has a newer machine. This bike did have a Hannigan sidecar attached for some period of time and the belly pan is included with the sale but is not attached as the sidecar mounts got in the way. As the original Corbin seat was tired, Bob’s placed a very fresh stock seat on it but there are no hinges as they got lost in the swap. For fans of the K75 this bike should deliver a few hundred thousand more miles for a few parts and some very minor TLC: we think it’s a great value.
Offered at: $2,795

1985 K100RS

Stock Number: 041333
Color: Silver
Mileage: 33,951
Accessories & Options: BMW saddlebag mounts, the stock tool kit a Progressive rear shock and bar backs. There is a switch for heated grips but we did not test them out; they may or may not work.
Cosmetic Condition: For the age it’s very good, there are assorted scratches and a very small hairline sub surface crack near the right mirror on the fairing upper. Both side covers look like they were either repainted or replaced. The dual seat was recovered in an excellent very slightly textured vinyl that’s not exactly like OEM but certainly much nicer. The wheels are exceptionally clean and so is the exhaust including the muffler. Even the clear portion of the fairing (screen) has not turned yellow as so many did.
Mechanical Condition: battery is almost gone, but when we keep it on a charger it starts right up. There are assorted small leaks showing, mostly due to lack of much use in recent years including rear main, fork seals and the rear master cylinder because it’s the old style reservoir that should be replaced. All three discs are right at spec which means they should really be replaced unless you live in a state like Virginia that only requires god pads. On the one test ride we gave it the technician felt the clutch was showing some signs of slippage, probably due to the small main seal leak. Tires are old but have some life left if you are a cheap skate. All switches and gauges look good as does most rubber.
Notes: In many ways this is a clean stock example of BMW’s first year K100RS right down to the paint which while not perfect appear to be mostly original still. It appears to have been a 25 year weekend rider because the bag mounts barely look like bags were ever attached and they did not come into us if the owner even had a set. Even the foot peg mounting sets are the early versions. On the other hand it needs some attention but nothing that could not be accomplished in just one weekend by a fair home mechanic and the needed parts. Some at the dealership think Bob should restore it and put it in the museum while others think someone else should have that chance. It’s the nicest 1985 K100RS we’ve seen in at least ten years.

1997 R1100RT
Stock Number: C63356
Color: Blue
Mileage: 86,477 original
Accessories & Options: ABS, heated grips, 4-way flasher, electric windscreen, BMW comfort seat (from R1150RT), luggage rack, bag mounts,
Dual accessory sockets, flip-a-lever cruise control , rear runnin’ lights and BMW saddlebags.
Cosmetic Condition: excellent paint, seats, wheels, hardware, and most all rubber. Left side riders peg is bag. There’s one medium small nick on left mirror and one on left lower. This bike should shine up very well.
Mechanical Condition: All brake discs pass MD at this time but they are all very close to minimum spec. Tires are very good, fluids could use freshening all around, throttle is a little rough and probably needs cables, the techs stated on the inspection that they feel it may been in need of swingarm pivot bearings which is not unusual after this many miles. It starts, runs, shifts and stops just fine, ABS worked on 03-17-2009 when Bob did the write up and photos. It has a new battery installed by Bob’s.
Notes: It has not been ridden much in the last 6 months and could use a good Italian tune and possibly throttle body sync but after some fresh fluids and a through detailing this bike should be a great ride for quite a while and for the smart person that replaces all the discs and pads now they probably won’t have to spend much money down the road.

1994 R1100RS
1994 R1100RSStock Number: 310385
Color: Red
Mileage: 42,829
Accessories & Options: ABS, 4-way flasher, spare cables, tool kit w/tire repair kit (inside), spare bulb, helmet lock, wrist rest, tinted Aeroflow windscreen, fender extension and BMW saddlebags
Cosmetic Condition: underneath all the filth of sitting for 6 years there lies a very clean original paint job. We gave it a very light bath just to confirm we were right. No dings, dents or scratches to note except a small impression from a tip over on the right valve cover and a missing rear right signal lens (not related). There’s a very few small spots of rust where it looks like the passengers boots rubbed paint off the frame
Mechanical Condition: bad tires, sidestand lock out switch bad, small final drive leak (inner seal?), ABS down the road is unknown as it’s been off the road a long time but it works fine now after several rides, the fuel low level light DNF. We installed a new battery & fuel pump & related strainer, hoses, wires, etc, flushed tank and it starts, runs and stops perfectly fine.
Notes: This bike was sold new at Bob’s and for the first ten years was lovingly cared for, ridden and maintained by Bob’s and the owner. Health issues caused its lack of use for the next 5 years. With a set of fresh tires and fluids plus a serious detailing job we suspect that this bike has several more decades and tens of thousands of miles left to be gleaned from it’s very solid and young heart.
Offered at: $3,995

1973 R75/5
1973 R75/5Stock Number: 986570
Color: Avus black w/chrome side panels and battery covers
Mileage: 58,453
Accessories & Options: Rack factory aluminum rack, Wixom Ranger saddlebags, Reynolds Ride Off stand, Wixom Ranger handlebar fairing
Cosmetic Condition: Rough. This bike sat outside a long time so there is plenty of visible rust and the paint has faded but it’s not dead. The wheels and tires were swapped ONTO this bike and are in much better condition. There is a small dent at the lower right side of the tank directly below the chrome panel which is not damaged, the headlight looks undented and round and has the front guts intact and the tail light is complete, correct and in good shape. The four alloy turn signals are also in excellent shape. The side covers and tank panels are certainly worth polishing up and while the grab rail on the seat is rusty the seat is in decent and serviceable shape. The valve covers are un-scratched and there’s almost no rust under the seat
Mechanical Condition: The engine is not turning over; some would say it’s locked up. We have no idea if the gearbox is free since you can’t turn one without the other unless you take it out. The electrics are all intact and everything under the front cover (no longer included) looks excellent including the sender for the electronic ignition. Inside of the tank is clean and dry. We’ve not opened the headlight but from outside we can’t see anything that should be missing except the chrome trim and switch slider
Notes: OK, it is a real project bike but we’ve seen much worse go home in the bed of a truck and come back completely restored six months later – just depends if that’s what you like to do and are capable of doing. The engine may require a full overhaul or simply need rings and a honing; you won’t know till you open it up. We do know that every gasket and seal and rubber part plus hardware should be replaced. We could easily part this bike out because we get weekly calls for headlights, gas tanks, Wixom fairings but especially the original aluminum turn signals, original tail light, battery covers are very hard to come by chrome tank panels but we’d rather it go to someone that will love it back to life so we’ve tried to price it accordingly. Like all of our project bikes we give the purchaser a fair window of time access their needs, make a list and to then purchase any parts they need for the resurrection of such a machine at a good discount; that can add some serious value and savings to a big project like this.
Offered at: $1,595

1995 R1100R
Stock Number: 379137
Color: Metallic Red (faded)
Mileage: 88,365 (one owner)
Accessories & Options: ABS, BMW Tachometer & Clock in L/R pods, Battery Voltage Indicator, Heated Grips, 4-Way flasher, wrist rest, GIVI luggage rack w/left bag carrier, Extra rear running & brake lights of unknown mfg, white LED’s (DNF), FOX front shock, side stand pad, 2 spare keys plus the one with the black knob are included.
Cosmetic Condition: This stock paint has badly faded so don’t let the good photos fool you, there is rust on lots of hardware, scratches in the paint and a few spots where it’s been touched up and is primed, passenger seat has a small (a quarter would cover it) hole in it, there is some yellowing on the transmission case, probably from an old fuel leak and we are sure it was not washed in quite some time. There are no dents or dings in tank or wheels and it’s really more about exposure to elements than anything else.
Mechanical Condition: This bike was ridden into us to purchase, twice actually and it starts, runs, shifts and stops fine. The clutch still feels strong, the front brake feels a bit soft and that’s probably because it’ needs to be bled, all the gauges and switches work and the euro light switch is a nice extra. There are some assorted loose wires that look like they were cut because they were; the prior owner removed some lights and did it fast. No factory wires were involved to our observations. The rear disc is well below specs and should be replaced, the fronts still look serviceable. The rear tire needs replacing but the front is in very good condition.
Notes: We can not unlock the seat so we don’t know if the tool kit is underneath; for all we know there’s $20,000 in cash tucked away. We do have the original manuals where you can see the original owner kept meticulous records for about two years, filled up the pages and if there are more details someplace we didn’t get them. While the cosmetics might be not beautiful the bike has a solid driveline and would be worth spending some time on to address the few needs it has.

1983 BMW R80ST
1974 BMW R90/6OK all you project bike enthusiasts, we know we ask you to look through the dirt and dull surfaces we haven't cleaned to see the shine that you yourself will add after completing any of our projects but this photo (taken by Bob) was just too irritable to pass up. Taken the day it arrived when it was snowing and the shop was closed. It then sat inside for quite a while until the seller decided what they were going to replace it with. We now have the title and he another BMW to enjoy.

So what's under that snow?

A relatively unmolested but truly neglected 1983 BMW R80ST. The R80ST is a bit of a rare beast as only 5963 were produced worldwide in 1982, 83 and 84. It has about 65,000 miles according to the seller who claimed to be the 2nd or 3rd owner having acquired it some years back. The engine turns over and the carbs are dry but there is residue in the float bowls. He states that it was running around the time the tag expired in 2005. The odometer shows 7900 miles but this is a replacement unit. There is NO IGNITION SWITCH or key (we may find a key to fit). The tires are crappy but the wheels, rims and spokes look like they should shine up very well as there's no visible rust, dings or scratches. There is fresh fuel and only one tiny ding in the tank FWIW and the gas cap is clean. The front disc looks like you'll be putting a new one on before taking it on the road but the master cylinder feels strong and the fluid is not too dirty. There is no evidence of crash or accident damage other than a few minor scratches on one valve cover. There is rust. It's on a lot of hardware, around the axles, the fork caps and even on the upper sections of the tubes. There's some on the carb tops and a little on the rear shock. The exhaust collector (under the trans) shows the usual surface rust but the muffler looks great. You'll have to decide if this becomes a bright and shiny R80ST when you're done or just a solid rider with some cosmetic issues you've acquired.

Now for a bunch of just positive stuff: Included are the original BMW tool kit, tool tray and tire pump plus a factory parts catalog that sells for about $90 and is NLA; a handy reference. The factory 2 piece cylinder guards are attached and have the optional BMW side stand too. There is a very decent set of BMW touring cases (small left & large right) that are included (were not outside when parked) as are the factory bag mounts and luggage rack which do have some rust. One lock on the left bag is failing but as a further bonus the left and right painted side covers with original decals and the black muffler cover all were removed before the exposure damage occurred and they are in really good condition. It's the civilized and paved road version of the R80GS!

Is this one for you? Can you visualize the value from the description and the lonely snow covered image that is literally hiding most of what you want to see? Are you up to the task? You could stay tuned for more photos taken on the next sunny day or you could contact Bob immediately to just tell him that you've got $1795 burning a hole in your wallet and want to claim it before someone else does.

SOLD!
