The 450 Sport Enduro

Racing creates emotions, Racing creates awareness, Racing builds an image
and credibility, Racing breeds a better bike.

BMW XPLOR Racing started with selected dealer teams in on and off-road
Motorsport in order to create awareness and build a dynamic image. This
strategy was supported by the team BMW Motorrad Motorsport which
participated at Pikes Peak, the Baja 500, the Baja 1000 and the GNCC.

Last week BMW Motorrad USA made the historic announcement of a national
race effort through the complete 2008 GNCC season. The new BMW XPLOR
Scott Summers GNCC team will have two professional XC1 racers in the
world’s most competitive enduro race series on the new BMW 450 sport
enduro.

Although we cannot announce details regarding a possible U.S. market launch,
we feel it is important to give you the full briefing on this new motorcycle.

We're not sure when this bike will arrive in the U.S. but we'll be happy to answer any questions.

Background:

The background to the development of this machine is the knowledge that competition based sport enduro motorcycles represent a segment with growth potential in the motorcycle market and BMW Motorrad wants to help shape this market. A positive by product of smaller volume off road motorcycles is that they open the gateway to both popular and professional motor sport as well as
offering enough potential to also help the young generation to discover the fascination with motorcycles. As mentioned before this motorcycle is purely a brand exercise at this point. A US Market launch is still to be determined.

Technical Details:

The engine is a 449cc single cylinder DOHC 4 stroke motor developed by BMW. The compact cylinder head of the short stroke four valve power unit houses the technical elements of the K 1200 S. For example, the intake valves are operated by follower valves, the outlet control by tappets. The crankshaft and connecting rod are fitted with roller bearings and the weight optimized two
ring piston is forged.

The transmission is a constant mesh five speed. The wet clutch sits directly on the crankshaft with diaphragm engagement. The benefits of this arrangement are that the clutch is considerably more compact and has a smaller diameter with the same number of plates and discs. Unlike conventionally geared down clutches this is possible because the clutch only needs to transmit a reduced load on the input shaft. The clutch is operated by cable.

The chassis of the BMW Sport Enduro is a completely new development that uses high quality, carefully selected components. The main consideration when it came time to set the geometry and overall configuration was off road racing. The frame of the BMW Sport Enduro is an absolutely new development that differs from all competitors. In the main part it consists of thin walled, but high-
strength stainless steel tubes and is welded to the node points with forged parts. No additional surface treatment is necessary. The entire main frame weighs merely 19lbs and is extremely stiff.

The front fork is a 45mm USD Marzocchi fork connected to a 21 inch wheel with 11.8 inches of travel. The 18 inch rear wheel is connected to an aluminum box section swingarm with 12.6 inches of travel. Brakes are double pistion floating caliper from Brembo and feature a 260mm front rotor.

The biggest innovation on the BMW Sport Enduro is the coaxial mount of the swingarm and chain pinion. The swingarm pivot has been mounted through the hollow gearbox output so that there is no longer any change in length of the chain as the swingarm moves through its stroke. This innovation makes it possible to have a 30mm longer swingarm which improves rear wheel traction.
