THE HEARTLAND OF
THE FORMER HABSBURG EMPIRE & A TRIP INTO EUROPEAN HISTORY!
Vienna
and Budapest are the main cultural focal points of this trip. Maribor
in Slovenia is an interesting addition to those two major capitals
which have a great deal in common and are connected by the Danube.
The tour starts in Vienna – in the city of waltz. From Vienna
we ride in the direction of the Hungarian Plains along Lake Neusiedl
to Györ, the first stay before we ride along the Danube to
Budapest. Exotic and cosmopolitan, the city spans the banks of the
Danube. Often called the “Queen of the Danube”, the
river divides Budapest in two. The ancient city of Buda is famous
for its fascinating caste district and on the other side, Pest is
the home to more modern architecture, as well as the cities commercial
center. A day in Budapest is a delight in every respect, whether
you visit the old part of Buda or plunge into one of the cities
ancient thermal spas. Next is Lake Balaton often called the “Hungarian
Sea” as many Hungarians spend their vacation on it’s
shores. So do we, on the Tihany Peninsula. Wine and goulash is served
for dinner, which is also called “Mulatschak”. We cruise
along the south western Hungarian country side into Slovenia. The
next day the capital Maribor, is the most advanced of all former
communist countries in Eastern Europe. We stay here for two nights
to explore its romantic old town or ride in the rugged mountains
surrounding it. It’s back to Austria – our tour leads
us through the hills and mountains of Styria. The hills and vineyards
of this region are dotted with castles. An overnight in one of them
is a special highlight. On the way back to Vienna we rest overnight
on the Semmering pass. In times past, this was a meeting place for
the rich and famous. Our hotel reminds us of this illustrious past.
The tour ends with a great ride through the Vienna Woods. Stay a
day or two longer and enjoy one of Europes most beautiful cities.
We have added one day in Semmering; it is on a mountain pass between
Graz and Vienna and offers a great opportunity to ride in a south-eastern
direction, with small, forestry mountain roads and a visit to a
very interesting castle as a diversion.
